The Dandenong & District Aborigines Co-operative Ltd (DDACL) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) which is governed by a community elected Board of Directors. DDACL is a family friendly, flexible, supportive workplace that supports staff and encourages training and development. This position provides a great opportunity to work with the Aboriginal community in southern metropolitan Melbourne.

Position Context

The position sits within the DDACL Health Services area and works closely with the Manager Aboriginal Health Programs and partner organisations.

The primary role is to provide Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) support to clients referred to the service as well as refer clients onto appropriate services, ensuring needs of the clients are met. The position also promotes the Health Service programs to external agencies and key stakeholders and meets with them regularly to assist in the development and implementation of initiatives that improve outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Advocacy and Referral for Clients
  2. Liaison with key stakeholders and professional networking
  3. Provide and maintain a working environment

Key Selection Criteria

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Relevant qualifications in Alcohol and Drugs or equivalent experience (AOD skills set)

Essential Criteria:

  1. Case management - demonstrated experience in working within the AOD casework or case management role
  2. AOD knowledge - specific knowledge of the causes and effects of drugs and alcohol, and addictions on individuals, families and communities.
  3. An understanding of all relevant legislation, policies and practices.
  4. Cultural competency - demonstrated experience working in cross-cultural settings, especially with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, families and communities.
  5. Stakeholder management - ability to build and sustain fruitful relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  6. Negotiation and advocacy skills - demonstrated ability to negotiate fruitful outcomes and advocate on behalf of vulnerable clients.

Other Desirable Skills, Knowledge And Experience:

  1. Extensive knowledge of local service providers and referral pathways
  2. Forensic client experience preferred
  3. Previous experience within the AOD or Mental Health Sector

Other Relevant Criteria:

  1. Completion of a satisfactory background and police check.
  2. Possession of or a preparedness to obtain a “Working with Children Check” card.
  3. A current unrestricted Victorian Driver’s licence.
