The Board of Community Resource Unit Ltd (CRU) is seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organisation into its next phase of growth and influence.

CRU has been at the forefront of promoting positive change for people with disabilities across Queensland and beyond for over 35 years. We are dedicated to inspiring, challenging and equipping people to build a more inclusive society where people with disability belong, contribute, and thrive.

CRU’s work is grounded in strong values of inclusion, diversity, relationships, courage, creativity, wisdom, and choice. Alongside its core activities, CRU leads and supports national initiatives through its involvement in the National Alliance of Capacity Building Organisations (NACBO) and oversees its social enterprise Crucial Training Options (CTO), enhancing sector development and training opportunities.

This appointment comes at a pivotal time for the disability sector, with changes in government policy and funding frameworks reshaping the environment in which organisations like CRU operate. These changes include reforms emerging from the Disability Royal Commission, the NDIS Review, and broader work across foundational supports and inclusive community building.

A key role for the incoming CEO will be to provide policy advice to the Board, nurture and expand CRU’s strategic alliances, and advocate strongly for a disability sector that is shaped by the voices, experiences, and leadership of people with disability. Meeting the evolving needs of our members, community and partners is core business.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a respected and influential organisation committed to deep systems change through leadership, capacity building, and advocacy.

Primary Purpose of Position:

To provide the leadership, strategic direction and operational management necessary to ensure CRU’s sustainability, responsiveness, and relevance. The CEO will build and sustain effective working relationships with government, peak bodies, community organisations and people with disability and their families. They will oversee CRU’s involvement with NACBO and act as a Director of Crucial Training Options (CTO).

Position Scope

The CEO will lead the organisation to achieve the strategic objectives outlined in CRU’s Strategic and Operational Plans, including:

  • Building the capacity and leadership of people with disability and their families
  • Leading sector development initiatives through CRU’s activities and Crucial Training Options
  • Strengthening national impact through active involvement in NACBO initiatives
  • Ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of CRU and its social enterprise arm
  • Advocating for inclusive policies and systems change
  • Supporting CRU’s membership base and community engagement initiatives
  • Positioning CRU as a trusted thought leader on disability inclusion and community belonging

The CEO will shape the way CRU develops its influence and secures a future where people with disability are respected and included at all levels of society.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this position will be demonstrating leadership; supporting team and culture; attending to stakeholder relationships; organisational management; financial oversight and supporting governance.

Personal Characteristics, Experience and Knowledge

  • CRU is seeking a leader who is aligned to the mission, vision and values of the organisation. They need to be resilient, flexible and able to build relationships.
  • They will have tertiary qualifications in human services and at least five years’ experience at a senior level. Knowledge of the disability sector and contemporary reform is needed.

Commitment

  • Full-time position.
  • Employment will be on a contract basis, subject to ongoing funding and satisfactory performance review.
  • The CRU office is located in Brisbane, Queensland. Some flexible work arrangements may be negotiated; however, it is expected that the CEO will work primarily from the Brisbane office and be available for regular engagement with the Board, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Some travel within Queensland and interstate will be required.
