Communications Officer

  • Location: Based in Canterbury with some flexibility to work from home
  • Part-time (22 hours per week)
  • Contract to June 2024
  • Classified under the SCHADS Award Level 6 Paypoint 3
  • $54.19 gross per hour + super + generous salary packaging

Are you experienced in communications in the For Purpose, non-government or government sectors? Do you have tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, public relations or marketing, or equivalent workplace experience?

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Admin Manager, you will oversee CRC's communications strategy that aims to positively effect change within the criminal justice sector. The role will also provide consistency for CRC’s external communications to ensure they are culturally sensitive, accessible and align with CRC values.

We are looking for a person who has demonstrated workplace experience in communications and media ideally within a community or For Purpose organisation. You will be committed to always working in a culturally safe and trauma informed manner. Ideally, you will have an understanding of issues relating to people impacted by the criminal justice system.
Your role includes:

  • Communications Strategy: You will develop and oversee a communications strategy which aims to positively effect change within the criminal justice sector to lead to better outcomes for vulnerable and criminalised populations.
  • Writing: You will write, review and pitch high quality content such as media releases, opinion pieces, key messages, statements, web and social media content for traditional and digital media. You will communicate public advocacy and policy positions and responses in a range of justice system areas, provide advice, guidance and contribute content to the CRC website, as well as social media.
  • Accessible and trauma informed content: You will write content that is presented in a culturally sensitive and trauma informed manner, using strength-based and person-centred language. You will also ensure content is accessible and appropriate for a variety of stakeholders, including people affected by the criminal justice system and those with cognitive impairment.
  • Media: You will develop and maintain relationships with key media stakeholders, respond to media requests, distribute and publish media releases through digital channels, and monitor the latest news on traditional and social media channels.
  • Style Guide: You will develop a style guide and brand manual to ensure all external communications are consistent.

Your usual work hours will be between Monday to Friday, with occasional out-of-hours work, as required.

The Community Restorative Centre (CRC) provides a range of services to people involved in the criminal justice system and their families. CRC is the lead provider of specialist throughcare, post-release, and reintegration programs for people transitioning from prison into the community in NSW.

All CRC programs aim to reduce crime and break entrenched cycles of disadvantage, offending and imprisonment. The work we carry out is wide and varied and aims to be responsive to CRC’s needs and the political climate. Importantly, our work is informed by the lived experience of the people with whom we work, CRC staff, the wider NGO sector, as well as academic and expert partners.

To join us, you’ll need:

  • Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, public relations or marketing, or equivalent workplace experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Expertise in writing engaging copy for various formats, from formal reports to social media and website copy
  • Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Ability to work unsupervised, manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines
  • Graphic design skills
  • Highly collaborative across multiple internal teams
  • Demonstrated commitment to CRC values
