Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre (BMCLC) is a program of Comm Unity Plus and provides free legal services, advice, referrals and community legal education. BMCLC services one of the fastest growing and most culturally diverse regions in Melbourne and has offices in St. Albans and Melton.

About the position

The Family Law Lawyer will collaborate with BMCLC lawyers to deliver family law legal services, including outreach and community partnerships targeted to assist those most vulnerable in the community.

In consultation with the Principal lawyer, will identify family law needs and opportunities for law reform and advocacy, help support a strategic and successful family law practice for the community in Melbourne’s outer West, including referral to key agencies specialising in family violence support, mediation and health.

This position will provide high quality legal advice in the family law practice area which include some of the following sub-areas: property settlement and mediation, parenting disputes, passport applications, name change applications, location orders, relocation orders, recovery orders, intervention order applications, and child support issues.

Key Selection Criteria and Qualifications

  • Admitted to the legal profession with a current Victorian Practising certificate
  • Minimum 2 years of post – admission Family Law experience and knowledge of the family violence sector coupled with experience in Property Law
  • Commitment and interest in working with individuals from diverse and disadvantaged communities on social justice issues with a good understanding of the role of the community legal centres in the legal and community sectors
  • Sound understanding of the nature and impact of strategic legal projects and the ability to identify systemic and public interest issues through community development work and casework.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large and diverse workload with minimal supervision and competing deadlines whilst working collaboratively and effectively as a part of a busy and passionate team.
  • Ability to supervise junior lawyers and volunteers undertaking legal service delivery
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently from a variety of locations across the catchment areas as per the requirements of the role
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills and a passion for stakeholder engagement.

Applicants must hold valid Working with Children Check and Police check or the ability to obtain the same. A current Drivers Licence and the ability to travel between offices and outreaches are essential for this role.
