Open Circle
Open Circle is a restorative justice service within the Centre for Innovative Justice (CIJ) at RMIT University. Open Circle was established in October 2019 following a successful pilot restorative justice program and a commitment to make restorative justice processes more accessible to people impacted by crime or other harms.
Open Circle offers restorative justice processes in response to a wide range of crimes and other incidents of harm. Additionally, we undertake research, policy and program design work in the area of restorative justice and restorative practice.
Policy, Strategy & Impact Portfolio:
The Policy, Strategy and Impact (PSI) Portfolio provides focus and momentum for the projects and priorities that were identified in Knowledge With Action: RMIT's Strategic Plan, developed in 2022.
PSI works to support and advance the implementation of RMIT's strategic priorities, including through public policy and government relations, strategy projects, innovative partnerships and capability development.
TAC Restorative Justice Program:
The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) manages a transport accident scheme that pays compensation to persons injured in transport accidents in Victoria. It is an objective of the TAC to ensure its scheme emphasises accident prevention and effective rehabilitation.
From 2015 to 2018, the Centre for Innovative Justice designed and conducted a pilot restorative justice program for TAC that made restorative justice conferencing available to people affected by traffic collisions that resulted in death or serious injury in Victoria.
The Centre for Innovative Justice and TAC now seek to expand that program into an ongoing service for people impacted by serious traffic collisions. TAC's Restorative Justice Program (Program) will provide people impacted by road trauma with a range of avenues to have their justice needs met by offering a safe, supported process to bring people together in facilitated dialogue.
