Our organisation

RMIT is a global university of technology and design, focused on creating solutions that transform the future for the benefit of people and their environments.

The Centre for Innovative Justice Researches, teaches and promotes modern and innovative ways of delivering justice both through formal court processes and within and across the broader justice system. The Centre's objective is to drive, develop and expand the capacity of the justice system to meet and adapt to the needs of its diverse users, and to contribute in a positive way to addressing the underlying issues that bring people into contact with the justice system.

The role

The Social Worker, Centre for Innovative Justice will provide services to clients of the Mental Health Legal Centre Inc. including advice, community referrals and, occasionally, individual case work.

The role will involve identifying and documenting the best way to provide particularly vulnerable clients with a wrap-around service, including establishing criteria and a triage process to determine which clients of the legal service should receive intensive case management support as opposed to information, advice and/or referrals only.

Your responsibilities

Reporting to the Principal Coordinator, Legal Programs, the role will provide high quality advice, community referrals and occasional individual case management support to clients of the Mental Health Legal Centre Inc (MHLC), collect relevant statistics and ensure client data is maintained in a confidential manner. The incumbent will also work with MHLC to design, establish and document triage and administrative client intake processes to determine which clients of the MHLC should receive case management support as opposed to information, advice and/or referrals only. The incumbent will also be required to supervise RMIT Bachelor and Masters Students on placement in accordance with approved guidelines.

Skills & Experience required

To be considered for this role, it is essential that you hold a relevant tertiary qualification in social work, be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers and possess at least 5 years professional experience in a similar role. You will have demonstrated experience in project management including designing, driving and documenting projects and initiatives, along with experience in working within a multidisciplinary team, ideally in a legal setting.
