CNLC works with the community of the Carlton Housing Estate, consisting of over 2500 residents, who come from diverse cultural backgrounds including Horn of African, Vietnamese and Chinese residents and many who have complex needs. With CNLC’s Open Door centre we support migrants and refugees in the local area to advance their circumstances in areas like housing, employment and financial management. We also host legal and other support clinics at the centre. Open Door's support service is complimented by our Make it Work employment service at Open Door to assist our clients into jobs or further education.

The Client Support Officer will work directly with migrant and refugee clients living at public housing estates.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Interview and help clients with private matters including accessing MyGov, filling in forms and resolving simple debts
  • Refer clients to other services such as counselling, housing and legal
  • Maintain up to date, accurate and confidential client records
  • Establish good working relationships with agencies delivering sessions at the Outreach Hub, such as Inner Melbourne Community Legal, and support them to deliver services at the Hub.
  • Refer clients to the Make it Work employment program where appropriate
  • Participate in other Open Door events where appropriate such as networking events for the Hub
  • Participate in team duties such as attending meetings, administration duties, training and maintaining good team communication.

KEY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Important Skills

  • Experience working with individuals and communities from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to network with connecting agencies and their workers
  • Good computer skills including internet searching, word-processing, excel spread sheets, E-mail, filling in online forms and both lap top and tablet use
  • Be organised, self-motivated and being in good time
  • Be able to problem solve and follow up help for clients

Helpful Skills

  • A Diploma or Degree in Community Development, Social Work or other relevant tertiary qualification in the social, community or behavioural sciences
  • Language or languages other than English
  • Understanding of local networks or willing to make relationships with other agencies and services
  • Current First Aid certificate

The role is part time (2 days a week) working on 2 of the following days: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays with some flexibility in working hours. Position is currently from February - May 2020 with the possibility of extension if funding conditions and positive performance appraisals allow.
