The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Victoria, providing specialist knowledge and support to young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. About the Role

The Youth Justice Lived Experience Mentoring Project aims to support young people from South Sudanese and Pasifika backgrounds under youth justice supervision to foster positive lifestyles and develop pro-social identities. Through the provision of intensive case management support, and guidance from lived experience mentors acting as positive role models, participants will be supported to identify and reach their goals and disengage from the criminal justice system.

Working closely with key stakeholders including Department of Justice and Community Safety, Deakin University, the program’s Team Leader, mentor coordinator and internal CMY programs, the Senior South Sudanese Youth Worker will be responsible for delivering intensive case management support to young people from South Sudanese backgrounds. Furthermore, this role is required to work as part of a team to recruit and support a team of lived experience mentors who will be matched with program participants. The position focuses on building a coordinated network of support and promoting a sense of connectedness to family, school or employment, peers and community that encourage pathways away from offending.

Key Selection Criteria

To be successful in the Senior Youth Worker role you need:

1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (i.e. social work, youth work, community development) and/or extensive work experience in the refugee and/or youth sector, including youth and adult justice settings.
2. Case work experience and demonstrated ability to engage high risk and complex young people and their families.
3. Knowledge and experience in appropriate interventions/skills required to support young people and families from African and Pasifika communities and a clear understanding of case management, intensive support, crisis intervention and assertive outreach.
4. Proven ability to engage with youth programs and other services to deliver positive outcomes for young people engaged with the justice system.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the capacity to liaise with a range of government and non-government stakeholders
