We are one of Australia’s largest and most experienced carbon farming project developers. This includes more than 160 projects with farmers, plantation managers, agribusiness, and Indigenous groups on carbon farming projects.

Climate Friendly has delivered over 20Mt in carbon abatement as at the end of 2020. Our immediate mission is to establish partnerships, by 2025, that will store or reduce 150Mt of CO2-e, while repairing nature and supporting reconciliation. The role

As a Botanist in our team, you will maintain the highest quality of botanical, and to a lesser extent, faunal (bird and feral animal) data collection within Climate Friendly.

To assist in assessing the likely eligibility of major vegetation groups at a national scale for carbon and nature repair projects, you will support the collation of scientific evidence through scalable recovery techniques, review and adjust our current field data collection to include botanical information, and work with academics and rural clients, both on farm and over the phone.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing field survey protocols and associated manuals, and delivering training, for assessing the ecological condition of the project portfolio.
  • Meeting agreed KPI targets such as site visits.
  • Conducting botanical, ornithological and other field surveys.
  • Creating pragmatic field survey guides for staff to assist upskilling of staff
  • Enhancing field manuals and data collection templates
  • Quantifying the botanical diversity and ecological condition of projects.
  • Collating field data into usable formats for nature project development, carbon project development and natural capital project development.
  • Developing and delivering training for internal staff
  • Maintaining records in our customer relationship management system
  • Creating and updating projects in Asana
  • Completing basic/intermediate QGIS mapping tasks as necessary
  • Establishing / maintaining positive working relationships with stakeholders including clients, industry regulators, government departments, Aboriginal Corporations, and other partner organisations.

This opportunity is being hired on an initial 12-month contract, with the prospect of a long-term permanent position.

About you

  • Qualifications/lived experience in fields related to botany.
  • Experience in a field data collection role, for example floristic and faunal surveys.
  • Experience in customer engagement and excellent interpersonal skills across a range of landholders.
  • Comfort with Microsoft suite, CRM systems and ideally basic skills in mapping systems like QGIS and/or willingness and capacity to quickly upskill in this space.
  • Ability to adapt to follow processes and adapt to change
  • Capacity to travel for fieldwork on a regular basis (1 week a month as a guide) and experience working/travelling in isolated areas using a 4WD.
  • Desirable:
  • Qualifications or experience in ornithological surveys.
  • Previous experience with Emissions Reduction Fund/Carbon Farming advantageous
  • Interest in climate change or conservation
  • First Aid certificate or willingness to complete
