Location: Ideally based on-site in Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef, with option to work remotely from a major city if willing to travel to Cairns frequently.

Citizens of the Reef is seeking a dynamic Head of Engagement to lead our communications, partnerships and supporter engagement strategies at a time of exciting global growth.

We are a fast-growing conservation organisation using people power, science and technology to help protect and conserve the world’s coral reefs. Our conservation programs— the Great Reef Census & Reef Cooperative —are global initiatives using world class science and reef stewardship approaches, combining citizen science, AI and reef intervention programs. Already mobilising thousands of people across 70+ countries to help conserve and protect the Great Barrier Reef, the organisation is now expanding to other reef systems around the world.

In this senior leadership role, you will drive the strategic development of our engagement programs, helping us grow and deepen relationships with our partners, supporters and the public. From managing major partnerships with the likes of Disney, Cotton On, Dell and Mars, to scaling up our schools program and growing a global virtual volunteer base, this is a rare opportunity to lead a high-impact portfolio.

You will also guide our communications and marketing team, shape the Citizens brand as we expand internationally, and work alongside a passionate team of scientists, Traditional Owners, tech innovators and conservation leaders.

Specific Duties

Citizen Engagement Programs:

  • Strategically scale and lead the growth of the Citizens of the Reef’s mass engagement programs.
  • Ensure that the organisation’s conservation values and world class science and delivery of impact are at the forefront of our communication.
  • Strategically develop the engagement of supporters and partners as the organisation grows internationally.
  • Support and enhance the organisation’s fundraising needs.

Partners:

  • Develop and lead effective strategies to engage our corporate partners, such as Disney, Cotton On, Dell, Mars and their employees and customers in conservation programs.
  • Coordinate and develop approaches that enable rapid growth with multiple partners and third-party program delivery partners.

Schools:

  • Strategically scale the Citizens successful schools’ program to match demand in Australia and internationally.

Public:

  • Work closely with our media partners and agencies to strategically develop and deliver campaigns that engage the general public in virtual volunteering.

  • Manage and support the Communications Manager to deliver timely and effective communications to engage key stakeholders.

Other:

  • General innovation of our engagement programs with new / emerging audiences.

Communications and Brand:

  • Lead the development of the Citizens brand and voice as the organisation strategically scales both in Australia and globally.

  • Act as media spokesperson for the Citizens of the Reef organisation at times.

  • Manage the growth and development of the communications and marketing team.

Citizens of the Reef Platform:

  • Contribute to the development and evolution of Citizens platforms that support virtual volunteering.

  • Utilise data, analytics and partner insights to improve and enhance the experience, growth and retention of our virtual volunteer community.

Engaging Partners & Funders:

  • Contribute to reporting and grant applications where applicable.

  • Communicating and engaging funders directly as applicable to specific engagement programs.

General:

  • Management/ownership of the Engagement budget

  • Exercise strong interpersonal and communication skills, ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders.

  • Assist the Citizens of the Reef team field work when required.

  • Willingness to travel interstate and internationally to attend events, meet with partners and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes

  • 8+ years of experience in marketing and communications.

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, or a related field.

  • International experience in marketing and communications (desirable).

  • Ability to develop, manage and execute strategic plans for a growing organisation, utilising a small team.

  • Leadership experience, including building, managing and developing small teams.

  • Blended experience in commercial and NGO sectors (desirable).

  • Demonstrated expertise in omni-channel customer experience and improving overall supporter engagement.

  • Proven ability to design, develop, and implement successful end-to-end customer/ supporter journeys, including engagement and retention strategies.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation, and influencing skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong relationship-building, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent project management skills with a track record of delivering multiple projects concurrently.

  • Demonstrated experience in using analytics and reporting to drive improvements.

  • Ability to effectively manage complex situations and work within online mediums to build customer connections.

  • A high level of personal integrity, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently and collectively to achieve goals.

  • A passion for conservation.

  • In water experience (desirable).
