The Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (Construction & General Division) (the CFMEU C&G) is Australia's main trade union in the building and construction industry.

One of the core principles of the union is to protect the health and safety of its members while at work. The union prides itself on being at the forefront of all issues in relation to Work Health and Safety (WHS). 

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated WHS professional to join our team. This is a fulltime position based at our Pyrmont (Sydney) national office. As the National WHS Officer your role will be split between the requirements of the CFMEU C&G national office and assisting the CFMEU C&G NSW Branch with its day-to-day WHS requirements. The position will include some interstate travel.

This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to become part of a dynamic organisation. The successful candidate will have a proven track-record as a WHS professional and will be able to work with minimal supervision.

Position Overview:

  • Identify current and emerging occupational health and safety issues (WHS) that may impact on construction workers in their workplace at a State and National level.
  • Investigate and undertake research and analysis on WHS issues affecting our members.
  • Write submissions on regulatory reform – both State and National.
  • Work with the Assistant National Secretary (WHS and Training) to lobby appropriate agencies and stakeholders to promote the best WHS interests of our members.
  • Provide advice to officials, delegates and HSR’s on WHS issues.
  • Represent the Union in a wide range of forums.

Qualifications and Experience:

The ideal candidate would have the following attributes:

  • Ideally a Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent, but a minimum of a Diploma of Work Health and Safety.
  • Experience and knowledge of the Australian building and construction industry.
  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation of detailed submissions and report writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in policy development and broad research skills.
  • A self-motivated person who is able to work independently as well as in a team and is able to meet deadlines and manage several issues simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • A clear understanding and commitment to trade union principles.
  • Public speaking experience and presentation skills.
  • Well-developed information technology skills with proven competence in the application of Microsoft Office.

Conditions of Employment
