We are seeking a voluntary Board Director for The Centre for Disability Studies (CDS).

Join our Board of Directors and help support our vision of a world where every person with intellectual disability has their human rights fulfilled.

The Board of CDS is seeking Expressions of Interest from interested persons to join the CDS Board to renew and strengthen our board in the areas of Law, Sustainability and Organisational Growth, Disability Sector Development, Governance and Intellectual Disability.

We are interested in individuals who:

  • Have a commitment to excellence in research, education, and health to build improved outcomes for people with intellectual disability.
  • Are in alignment with CDS values of Integrity, Innovation, Respect, Diversity and Collaboration.
  • Have highly effective interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Reside and/or work within metropolitan, rural or remote parts of Australia.

About CDS

CDS is a non-profit organisation operating since 1997. Our mission is to create and disseminate knowledge, evidence and practice to improve the lives of people with intellectual disability. Our focus is on designing and developing research, teaching and workforce development initiatives, and clinical practice that informs ID policy and practice.

CDS holds a Research Affiliation with the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. We offer research, evaluation and expertise working in partnership with a range of stakeholders including people with disability, non-government organisations, governments, and family members.

Our work is guided by the lived experience of people with intellectual disability. We strive to meaningfully engage people with intellectual disability in the creation, development, and execution of our programs.

About the Role

The board is responsible for the overall governance, management and strategic direction of CDS, and for delivering accountable corporate performance and compliance in accordance with the Constitution and Strategic Plan. Board Members are expected to:

  • Monitor CDS’s strategic scope, direction and the attainment of its strategies and priorities in conjunction with the CEO; and updating these periodically in response to sector changes in conjunction with the CEO.
  • Monitor and respond to changes in CDS’s operational and financial position and performance.
  • Oversee the design, implementation and periodic review of appropriate and effective policies, processes and codes thereby assuring that the CDS’s reporting mechanisms are designed to result in adequate, accurate and timely information being provided to the board.
  • Ensure that the principal risks faced by CDS are identified and overseeing that appropriate control and monitoring systems are in place to manage the impact of these risks.
  • Ensure that the CDS’s affairs are conducted with transparency and accountability and in line with CDS Values.

Commitment

This is a voluntary role requiring attendance (in-person and/or virtual) at quarterly board meetings and some engagement between meetings.

The role also calls for active participation in one or more of the three Board Committees, which are Finance, Governance and Inclusion. This participation involves attending meetings in person and/or virtually, and some supplementary work between meetings.
