About the team

The PR & Communications Specialist role sits in the Marketing & Communications Unit within the Marketing & Fundraising division. The Marketing & Communications Unit is responsible for promoting, positioning and protecting Cancer Council’s brand and reputation across NSW, and supports the whole organisation.

About the role:

The PR & Communications Specialist plays a critical role in helping Cancer Council NSW meet its organisational objectives through public relations and communications activity. This role is responsible for developing and executing PR strategies for one or more of our key functions, responding to reactive media requests, creating external messaging, sourcing real life stories, working with high profile ambassadors, liaising with relevant internal and external stakeholders, and effectively managing issues and opportunities.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Develop and execute a PR strategy for 1-2 of Cancer Council NSW’s key functions (Prevention, Advocacy, Fundraising, Research or Cancer Information & Support), with specific measurable KPIs
  • Develop clear, consistent and effective communications collateral for use across a range of traditional and online channels
  • Proactively liaise with the media to place creative and newsworthy stories
  • Respond to media requests within agreed deadlines
  • Brief CCNSW spokespeople on key messages for media interviews and responses
  • Source real life stories for use in marketing and communications collateral
  • Manage/advise on minor reputational issues where required
  • Use agreed measures to effectively track and evaluate the impact of our PR activity, and refine approach based on results
  • Work in partnership with the Marketing and Digital teams to deliver integrated campaigns and content
  • Support with working to grow our high profile ambassadors and influencer network
  • Embrace an enterprise approach to working, building a solid understanding of how the units in the M&F division work and where the PR team can add value
  • Act as a subject matter expert on our verbal brand, educating stakeholders on how to use it
  • Work on communications projects and key corporate documents such as the Annual Report as required
  • Keep abreast of best practice PR tactics and trial their use in the PR & Communications team
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, such as the wider Cancer Council Federation, the media, community and high profile ambassadors
  • Participate in the out-of-hours media roster

About you

Essential:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in an in-house or agency PR/communications role
  • Ability to spot what makes a good story and the resources required to sell it in
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders to deliver excellent results
  • Excellent spoken and written communication and presentation skills
  • Self-sufficient with ability to spot opportunities and take initiative
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work with stakeholders at all levels
  • Proven stakeholder relationship / management skills
  • Good organisational, project management and time management skills
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to respond to media requests outside of normal business hours

Desirable:

  • Strong relationships with all types of media
  • Experience of delivering great outcomes on limited budgets
  • Experience of integrating paid and owned media into PR campaigns
