About the team

Cancer Council NSW (CCNSW) and The University of Sydney (USYD) have formed a Joint Venture, The Daffodil Centre (DC). CCNSW is Australia’s largest cancer research organisation with established links to policymakers and internationally recognised researchers.

USYD is Australia’s first university and its Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH), and Cancer Research Network include many of the world’s leading researchers across all health disciplines.

The DC combines the complementary strengths of these two partners to concentrate cancer control research expertise, accelerating the partners’ aims towards the realisation of a cancer free future.

About the role:

The Daffodil Centre Ovarian Cancer Research Stream aims to build a world-class research team focused on ovarian cancer epidemiology, bioinformatics, and mathematical modelling.

The role involves conducting high-quality, impactful research, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, and building collaborations with key scientists in the field.

The researcher will make significant scientific contributions, plan and conduct statistical analyses using national and international datasets, contribute to grant funding applications, and work towards increased standing within the scientific community through appointments to external bodies and wider contributions to the field.

This is a full-time contract role ending in June 2027.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • To conduct data analyses using analytical software (for example, R).
  • To lead research projects with support from the team.
  • To communicate scientific findings by publishing in peer-reviewed high-impact journals.
  • To write and contribute to high quality presentations and present results at scientific meetings and local team meetings as appropriate.
  • To develop skills and capabilities in ovarian cancer research and contribute to the preparation of grant applications for funding by external bodies.
  • To regularly liaise with supervisor to ensure research objectives are met in a timely fashion.
  • To assist with Daffodil Centre administrative tasks and reporting, and research ethics protocols as required.
  • To ensure that ethical and privacy requirements are met for research projects.
  • To perform any other duties that may be required to meet the needs of the Ovarian Cancer Research Stream and the organisation, including but not limited to, fund-raising events and community outreach.

About you

Essential:

  • PhD in relevant discipline and relevant experience (academic or other) in the field of epidemiology, public health, bioinformatics, statistics, and/or cancer research.
  • Experience in programming and interpreting results from a variety of statistical models, preferably in a health or medical related field.
  • Eligible for a Level A or B appointment at an Australian university.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Proven publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Expertise in quantitative health research.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and software such as R.
  • Demonstrated ability in providing leadership in research.
  • Ability to engage with other people within an organisation and externally to achieve organisational goals.
  • Ability to independently solve problems.
  • High level of interpersonal and verbal communication skills including conference presentations.
  • Willingness and capacity to implement required OHS policies and safe work practice.
  • Ability to implement equal opportunity and diversity policies and programs.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in the field of ovarian cancer, gynaecological cancer and/or women's health research.
  • Experience conducting analyses of large data sets such as prospective cohort study or case-control study designs.
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Previous experience in preparing competitive funding applications.
