About the team

The Cancer Information and Support Services (CISS) Division aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one need face cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer journey, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

Our client-centred approach connects people affected by cancer with information, support services and prevention and screening programs across our NSW community footprint. Our Community Team works locally, focusing on understanding and addressing the insights and needs of communities in which they live and work.

About the role:

The Lead, Community will be based in community and is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of a dispersed team based across NSW. In collaboration with the other Lead, Community, this role is responsible for operational and implementation aspects of the services, programs and engagement with key stakeholders across community, aligned to organisational strategy and annual business priorities.

The Lead also supports the Manager Community, on key projects, focused on meeting CCNSW strategic objectives.

This role is a full-time permanent role. The location of this role is flexible, and we are accepting applications from candidates based in Wagga Wagga, Orange, or Wollongong.

Key responsibilities of the role:

• Lead and cultivate a high performing, geographically dispersed and multi-disciplinary team, ensuring achievement of performance objectives, and on-going development, engagement, and retention of staff.
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the community team ensuring that services and programs are delivered in a client centric manner and in line with the delegated budget.
• Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of the cancer landscape in community, to extend the reach of Cancer Council’s efforts in prevention, screening program participation, advocacy, information, and support services.
• Build, retain and grow high quality key stakeholder relations and engage communities to support Cancer Council through partnerships and volunteering. This includes partnering with priority communities in the co-design and delivery of programs, services and activities.
• Provide local community and data-driven insights that inform efforts in prevention, screening program participation, advocacy, information and support services.
• Implement and lead division and service specific projects and contribute subject matter expertise to other priority projects as required.
• Develop and implement effective change management and communication strategies to influence internal and external stakeholders.
• Support the Manager Community in evolving the services and programs to ensure alignment with the CCNSW strategic direction.
• Represent Cancer Council at relevant conferences, external meetings and other speaking opportunities.
• Perform specific operational tasks related to facilities management, fleet management, Work Health & Safety and/or risk & compliance as requested from time to time by the Finance, Strategy & Operations & People & Communications Division to support the safe and efficient operation of the office location, fleet vehicles, and/or other assets or services.

About you

Essential:

• Tertiary Qualifications or equivalent in a health-related field or community engagement.
• Demonstrated understanding of community engagement practices and principles
• Ability to identify and develop relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders across diverse communities to assist in achieving organisational strategy.
• Experience leading, managing and developing staff to achieve objectives, both face-to-face and in a remote working environment.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills.
• An understanding of the needs and experience working with population groups with disproportionately poor cancer outcomes, as well as knowledge of the NSW health system, including primary healthcare, and trends in health and social welfare.
• Experience developing and embedding policies and procedures.
• Experience project and program management skills.
• Highly developed skills in communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, facilitation and managing change.
• Knowledge and proficiency in working in Microsoft 365 and comfortable with new systems integration.
• Willingness to travel regularly throughout NSW and work flexible hours, including weekends.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.

Desirable:

• Experience in a not-for-profit or community-based organisation, and/or building the public profile of programs and services.
• Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
