About the team

The Information and Technology team plays a key role in helping Cancer Council NSW achieve its vision and strategy goal. The team is comprised of passionate and purposeful individuals tasked with leading and executing technology and data strategy. We aim to grow our impact within the organisation by effectively managing our data and maintaining a customer-centric approach to our service.

About the role

We are seeking a talented individual for a newly created role within our IT team, reporting to the Data Governance Manager. In this position, you will support the Data Governance Manager in establishing and delivering organisation-wide data governance strategies and activities. You will help shape and drive our workstream outcomes, both immediately and in the coming years. You will also play a key role in operationalising our data management roadmap and working closely with other IT teams to help ensure Cancer Council NSW data is discoverable, classified, and effectively managed in alignment with business policies and regulatory requirements. Key responsibilities of the role

  • Support the implementation our strategy that align with the organisation’s objective and industry best practise
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to manage the delivery of data governance and security-related projects
  • Collaborate with IT teams to map data sources and enforce governance best practices.
  • Configure and customise data classification, labelling, and sensitivity policies to ensure compliance with business standards and regulatory frameworks.
  • Maintain and optimise Purview services, ensuring alignment with business needs, data and security policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Document technical specifications, best practices, and governance workflows, providing training and guidance to business users
  • Identify and implement improvements in systems and processes within your area of responsibility
  • Oversee the management and tracking of data throughout its lifecycle ensuring its accessibility. reliability and timeliness
  • Measure and report on governance-related metrics, recommending improvements as needed
  • Support on-going data governance and data management operational activities

About you

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 3+ years' experience in data governance, information management related area
  • Experienced in Microsoft Purview for data governance, compliance, and metadata management.
  • Knowledge of data governance frameworks and methodologies, including data classification, sensitive labelling, data quality, metadata management
  • Experienced working with various data sources and platforms to establish seamless data lineage, metadata management, and governance workflows.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance standards, ensuring data governance solutions meet industry regulations. · Understand and operate in compliance with applicable, policies, procedure, legislation and guidelines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to optimise data governance frameworks
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical business teams.
  • Ability to work and collaborate with cross functional teams IT security, Application services and business teams to achieve organisation goals
  • Critical thinking skills to address business needs through technology.
  • Attention to detail, ensuring compliance and accuracy in data governance policies
  • Adaptability to change within data governance trends and regulatory requirements
  • Agile approach in delivery focusing on outcome that drive value for the organisation


Desirable

  • Experienced in development and implementation data discovery processes to enhance data quality, security, and accessibility across the organisation.
  • Experienced in design and build data classification strategies utilising sensitive information types, manual and automatic labelling across M365 and other endpoints
  • Experience in defining and implementing retention policies and retention labels in Microsoft Purview.
  • Understanding of ETL processes, data integration, and structured/unstructured data management.
  • Familiar with scripting language like Python or PowerShell to automate configuration and data processes
  • Knowledge of DAMA Principles: Strong understanding of DAMA (Data Management Association) principles and data governance frameworks
