  • Two 30hr/week positions available: 1x ongoing, 1x 12-month maternity cover
It is a genuine requirement of this position that the Counsellor is a woman as per the exemption granted to Children by Choice by the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Children by Choice exists to support reproductive autonomy through compassionate, evidence-based services.

As a Counsellor, you will provide high-quality, trauma-informed support to individuals navigating complex pregnancy decisions, pregnancy loss, reproductive coercion, and other reproductive health experiences.

You will work within a feminist framework, honouring client autonomy, lived experiences, and challenging systemic barriers to reproductive choice.

This role is ideal for a skilled counsellor who is passionate about social justice, creating inclusive, safe spaces, and contributing meaningfully to a mission-driven, collaborative team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver trauma-informed, client-centred counselling to individuals facing complex pregnancy decisions, pregnancy loss, reproductive coercion, or other reproductive health issues, using structured, evidence-based frameworks adapted to client needs.

  • Design, deliver and evaluate peer and therapeutic group programs aligned with organisational priorities and client demand.

  • Provide telephone counselling and intake support as needed, including coverage for cancelled appointments or peak service periods, to ensure responsive and accessible service delivery.

  • Work collaboratively with the Pregnancy Options team to ensure smooth client journeys from intake through to assessment and counselling support.

  • Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential client records, assessments, and outcome tracking in line with organisational policies and legislative requirements.

  • Participate in regular clinical supervision, reflective practice, and professional development activities to maintain best practice standards.

  • Contribute to the development, review, and improvement of internal resources, counselling procedures, and client-facing materials.

  • Actively uphold Children by Choice’s commitment to a pro-choice, feminist, client-led model of service delivery.

SELECTION CRITERIA

To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A minimum three-year tertiary qualification in Counselling from a recognised institution.

  • Current registration, or eligibility for registration, with ACA and/or PACFA.

  • At least two years of clinical counselling experience, preferably within the women’s health, reproductive health, or community health sectors.

  • Experience in designing, developing, and facilitating both therapeutic and peer support group programs.

  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment to deliver exceptional, client-centred support to individuals and families navigating pregnancy options and reproductive health care.

  • Alignment with the vision, mission, values, and feminist principles of Children by Choice.

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust, establish rapport, and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, management, and sector partners.

  • A current and valid Paid Blue Card (Queensland Working with Children Check) or eligibility to obtain one.

REMUNERATION AND CONDITIONS

  • Position classified under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (SCHADS Award) at Level 5.1.
