Central Australian Women’s Legal Service (CAWLS) is a multi-disciplinary Community Legal Centre providing services for all women in Central Australia and the Barkly Region, with offices based in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated team committed to providing representation and excellent outcomes for our clients. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.

We are committed to providing holistic, culturally safe, trauma-informed wrap-around services, achieving excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, client support, financial counselling, community legal education and outreach. ABOUT THE ROLE

Exciting opportunities exists within the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service to join our legal team.

CAWLS is seeking self-motivated candidates with demonstrated legal practice experience and a strong work ethic to provide high quality legal advice and representation with CAWLS areas of practice. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about improving access to justice for women.

We are looking for 1 solicitor to work in Alice Springs and 1 solicitor to work in Tennant Creek. Relocation assistance may be available (as per CAWLS relocation policy).

CAWLS service delivery includes;

  • Family law, divorce, property, children,
  • Domestic and family violence,
  • Child Protection,
  • Discrimination,
  • Credit & Debt,
  • Tenancy,
  • Employment including Workplace Sexual Harassment,
  • Victims of Crime applications,
  • Other civil law matters.

As a Solicitor with the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service, you will be working in a small but busy and tight knit team. Under the direction of the Senior Management Team, the Solicitor will be engaged in legal advice, casework, outreach clinics, information and referrals, community engagement, community legal education and law reform.

Excellent ongoing training and on the job support will be provided to the successful applicant.

Total effective package includes: base salary, superannuation, leave loading, relocation assistance and salary packaging options. Annual progression within the salary scale is subject to satisfactory performance.

ABOUT YOU:

You must be eligible to hold a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory and hold or have the ability to obtain a NT Drivers licence, NT Ochre card (working with children) and a current National Police check.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing high quality legal advice and representation within CAWLS areas of practice and guidelines.
  • Assisting CAWLS Management to develop and maintain the law practice and its systems to ensure legal services align with the Centre’s practice modes, organisational priorities, professional responsibilities, and funding obligations.
  • Working with colleagues across the organisation to deliver holistic and wrap around services for clients including appropriate referrals to other services and agencies when necessary.
  • Representing clients at the local court, in the Federal Circuit court and other tribunals as necessary and to assist with the provision of duty lawyer services.
  • Undertaking Outreach to provide legal advice and representation to women. May include occasional travel to remote locations.
  • Assisting to plan, deliver, and evaluate community legal education resources and presentations as requested by the Manager, Policy and Education.
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate networks with relevant community-based organisations, engaging in partnership development activities to build awareness of the service for CAWLS clients.
  • Undertake and/or participate in policy and law reform & assist with the writing and editing of texts for publication as required.
  • Supporting other colleagues, particularly when they are out of office, by taking responsibility for their files.
  • Other duties as delegated by the Senior Management team.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records and some data entry.
