Political Advisor

Cate Faehrmann MP

Greens MP Cate Faehrmann is looking for a dynamic, passionate person with a strong understanding of green politics to join her team in the NSW Parliament.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape a role around you. Because the role of a Political Advisor is so varied, we’re looking for someone who will be a bit of an all-rounder. That means we’re not necessarily looking for formal qualifications or professional experience in a particular area. What is important to us is finding someone with a broad skill set including in campaigning or advocacy and a willingness to learn.

You’ll be working in an energetic and fast-paced environment as part of a motivated team. You’ll play a critical role in responding to the many local and statewide issues raised by constituents and will support key stakeholders including Greens members and other affected community members across NSW. Frequent morning and evening work may be required, including sometimes accompanying Cate on trips across the state - where you’ll meet extraordinary people from all walks of life who are fighting for a better future for all of us! Ideally, the successful applicant will have some knowledge or experience of Cate’s portfolios (listed below).

Some of the main duties of a Political Advisor include:

  • Constituent liaison including monitoring and responding to email inquiries and phone calls
  • Managing Cate’s diary and coordinating her appearance at events
  • Drafting and editing communications such as email blasts, petitions, flyers and social media copy
  • Keeping abreast of developments relevant to Cate’s portfolios, including in the media
  • Working with Cate and the Policy & Legislative Advisor to help draft media releases, speeches and researching issues relevant to Cate’s portfolios
  • Building strong networks and relationships with community groups and Greens members across the state, connecting Cate with their work, and them with our work
  • Using graphic design and video editing tools such as InDesign, Premiere or Canva for content creation, including digital and print material
  • Working closely with Cate’s small team to ensure the smooth running of the parliamentary office and Cate’s parliamentary and community activities.

Selection Criteria

The following selection criteria is a good guide as to what Cate is looking for. However, you don’t have to meet all of these criteria to apply. So long as you know you can pick up new skills and knowledge quickly!

Essential

  • Experience working, either voluntarily or in a paid capacity, with the Greens and/or the not-for-profit sector and/or local community groups
  • Working knowledge of at least one of Cate’s portfolios
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong office administration skills, including email and diary management
  • Excellent organisational skills, ideally with experience organising events (ie meetings, webinars, public rallies, forums, etc)
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated proficiency with social media platforms, including experience in writing and producing content which inspires people to take action
  • Knowledge of Nation Builder or familiarity with a similar CRM
  • Proven ability to work autonomously or part of a team, manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment
  • Commitment to the Greens' values and principles, with a passion for social justice, environmental sustainability, peace and non-violence and grassroots democracy

Desirable

  • Good knowledge of NSW
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Canva, Premiere or other similar software with a good eye for design
  • Experience dealing with the media, including developing and pitching stories to journalists
