This is an opportunity to work with a young boy as a support worker and mentor. Having been through some tough times and diagnosed with autism he has managed to cultivate a love of sport, gaming and playing the guitar.

Mum has ensured a lot of support and assistance is in place to facilitate this young man’s development. She is looking to engage a young vibrant individual to work with her son, to broaden his interests, and ultimately help him develop the skills and confidence he needs to live a normal life.

The Role

The role will initially start by building trust and developing the relationship. A patient and sensitive approach will be key to assisting this young man to develop some of the skills he requires to be able to socialise confidently with other peers his age.

There will initially be some time at home engaging in activities and games that he enjoys. As the relationship grows, so will the aim to venture further out and about and discover new activities in the community. If you play the guitar, he would love you to teach him.

To get started:

  • Engage in games at home including Xbox
  • Teaching guitar
  • Create connection conversations in order to develop a trusting relationship
  • Provide structured feedback and documented reports to pass on to mum and other professionals

Hours

  • Tuesday 5.30pm – 9.30/10pm
  • Thursday 5.30pm – 9.30/10pm
  • Extra ad-hoc shifts plus days during school holidays available

Requirements

Whilst this is a mentor and support role it will be highly developmental with objectives and goals in place that are monitored by Mum and guided by Case Workers and Health Professionals.

  • Blue Card and have or be willing to obtain a police check
  • Full drivers licence and roadworthy car
  • Flexible with availability
  • Previous experience with youth work, coaching sport or mentoring highly desirable
  • A love of playing the guitar and desire to teach
  • An understanding of youth trauma desirable but not essential
  • An ability to guide behaviour in a positive way
  • An understanding or exposure to Aspergers/Autism
  • Compassion and understanding are essential for this family
  • Flexible, adaptive, responsive and patient in your approach
  • A deep enjoyment of mentoring, coaching and teaching
