Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital’s (BBWH) mission is to conserve, protect and ensure positive welfare outcomes for Australian wildlife through treatment, rehabilitation, research and education. Everything we do is underpinned by important principles of ethics and animal welfare.

BBWH is a not-for-profit wildlife conservation organisation providing professional veterinary and rehabilitation services for sick, injured and orphaned native animals. Based in the Northern Rivers region of NSW, it is the only all-species wildlife hospital outside of Taronga Wildlife Hospitals, staffed by a full-time team of expert wildlife veterinarians and nurses and is open 7 days a week. Its serviced are provided free of charge.

BBWH is funded entirely through public donations, philanthropy, grants, fundraising events, sponsorship and bequests, making this role vital to our ability to continue to provide and grow our services.

THE ROLE

Building on our current base of donors across the fundraising spectrum, the Fundraising Manager will be primarily responsible for structuring, managing and executing a multi-stream fundraising program with a focus on attracting nurturing and retaining long-term philanthropic relationships, legal bequests and an engaged base of donors and supporters.

The role will work alongside other team members responsible for fundraising events, corporate sponsorships and government grants to ensure a focus on achieving revenue targets.

The purpose of the position is to support the veterinary hospital team to effectively deliver the best possible care for wildlife patients by ensuring they have access to the resources they need to perform their work. The Fundraising Manager will be regularly in the public space and is pivotal in helping build our brand and financial sustainability through representation of our core mission.

The primary focus of the Fundraising Manager will be relationships with philanthropic foundations, current and potential donors, a bequests program and the development and implementation of a multi-stream fundraising strategy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and nurture relationships with existing and new philanthropic partners and create a retention strategy.
  • Develop and implement a multi-stream fundraising strategy aligned to the business plan.
  • Maintain and grow an existing donor database through sourcing new donations.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of strategic fundraising events to build and convert awareness into income through structured philanthropy, major gifts and regular donations.
  • Analyse data to make recommendations about future activities.
  • Continuous focus on improving the donor experience.

KEY SKILLS

  • Demonstrated experience in a fundraising environment, utilising a range of methodology to secure donations and partnerships.
  • Experience stewarding and nurturing six figure multi-year gifts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport, liaise and interact with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, from varied backgrounds and cultures in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with demonstrated ability to execute projects and events on time and on budget.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to deliver engaging presentations, events and other public interactions.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in roles where relationship building is a prominent component.
  • Ability to inspire and foster a fundraising culture across the organisation including Board members, staff and volunteers.
