Job summary

The Mentor Training Coordinator role will focus on providing mentor screening, training and ongoing development support services to new mentors from the City of Yarra’s South Sudanese community participating in the Walk Beside Me Program (WBM), delivered in partnership with Blue Light Victoria. Successful mentors will support younger members of the South Sudanese community (aged 7-14) through regular group mentoring sessions at local housing estates in the City of Yarra where mentees and some mentors reside. The Mentor Training Coordinator will also support the Blue Light Project Coordinator in facilitating the regular group mentoring sessions between mentors and mentees.

Required skills and experiences:

  • Demonstrated experience working with CALD communities.
  • Program development experience.
  • Strong training, meeting and workshop facilitation skills.
  • An understanding of the issues associated with assessing, supervising & supporting volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster strong local partnerships and engage with local stakeholders.
  • Well-developed IT skills including Microsoft office suite and database management.
  • A self-starter with leadership and communication experience.
  • Ability to build rapport and relate to a number of different stakeholder groups from a wide variety of backgrounds, in particular CALD communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of adolescent child development.
  • Understanding of challenges faced by CALD communities in Australia.
  • Understanding and experience of the social services system.
  • Understanding of mentoring and leadership philosophies and best practice.
  • Willingness to work across various sites as required, including in government housing estates.
