The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

The Senior Policy and Project Officer supports the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and its Committees in their regulatory role, policy and standards development by researching and developing registration standards, professional codes, standards, guidelines and policy which meet the National Board’s requirements, and undertaking appropriate internal and external stakeholder consultation as required. 

A key focus of the role is to oversee the National Board’s project portfolio related to the education of nursing and midwifery professions and ensure that the project deliverables are completed on time and within budget.  This requires the coordination of internal and external resources relevant to the National Board project portfolio.  

Multiple Full time, fixed term opportunities (12 months), Melbourne is preferred location but welcome applications from other jurisdictions.

In this role you will:

  • Develop implementation plans and materials for new or revised policies, standards or guidelines to ensure understanding and a nationally consistent approach
  • Contribute to and/or coordinate the development and review of registration standards, codes, guidelines and policy which meet the objectives and guiding principles of the National Law and good regulatory practice, including in relation to inter-professional education and collaborative practice.
  • Develop or contribute to concept papers and business cases for consideration by the NMBA for future projects or research activities.
  • Participate in, and / or develop and implement project plans to ensure that registration standards, codes, guidelines and policy are developed within relevant time frames and funding
  • Convene and or facilitate meetings to ensure all project stakeholders and staff are informed of relevant developments

As the ideal candidate, you will demonstrate the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of expertise 
  • Experience working as a nurse or midwife (desirable)
  • Previous experience working in the nursing and/or midwifery education sector
  • Considerable experience in the development of health profession policy advice, ideally relating to health practitioner regulation.
  • Sound understanding of project management methodology.
  • Well-developed conceptual and analytical skills.
  • Sophisticated written and verbal communication skills
