The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

About the role

The Lawyer, Legal Services – Professional Misconduct Unit will work closely with a Legal Advisor and contribute to the management of litigated matters, including disciplinary proceedings and appeals. You’ll conduct legal research, prepare advice and contribute to the effective regulation of health practitioners – particularly in matters involving allegations of professional misconduct.

This is a 12-month fixed term position, based in any of our Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin or Brisbane offices.

In this role you will:

  • Assist in the preparation and management of litigated disciplinary and appeals matters
  • Conduct legal research and draft clear, high-quality legal advice
  • Interpret and apply legislation, policies and procedures within a regulatory and statutory framework
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and external parties such as legal counsel and tribunals
  • Contribute to a positive team culture focused on collaboration, accountability and public protection

About you

You’re a legally qualified practitioner with strong analytical and communication skills, and you’re confident navigating complex legal and regulatory frameworks. You take initiative, work well in a team, and thrive in a role where your work contributes to public safety and professional accountability.

What you’ll bring

  • Admission as a legal practitioner
  • Sound understanding of administrative law and governance in a regulatory or statutory context
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of court and tribunal practice and procedure
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in conducting legal research from primary and secondary sources
