About the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP)

BASP is a small Catholic service working towards a humane, just and inclusive approach for people seeking asylum in Australia.

Set up in 2001 by the Brigidine Sisters, BASP has a small staff supported by a large number of volunteers. Our four aims are hospitality / practical support; education and community awareness; networking with others seeking justice, and advocacy seeking change to a fairer system.

The practical assistance includes housing individuals and families awaiting visa determination across Melbourne. Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project is one of the community works in Kildare Ministries.

This role will report to and work with the two coordinators who manage the project and will primarily:

  • Assist in establishing a system of monitoring the housing provided by BASP, involving routine checks and follow up of safety requirements and maintenance issues.
  • Facilitate residents moving into the properties, including the provision of all required items needed in the house.
  • Assist residents in understanding the expectations and responsibilities of living in BASP housing, including rental payments when indicated, and work to resolve issues, conflicts and concerns if and as they arise.
  • Assist residents in becoming familiar with community services and connections in their area.
  • Work with residents moving on from BASP housing to private rental or other options
  • Assist residents in other ways depending on their circumstances and as directed.

While based in Albert Park, the role involves considerable travel around Melbourne and flexibility dependent on issues and needs arising in the houses.

It is expected that the successful applicant/s will be comfortable with and respect the mission and values of BASP, as well as understanding and respecting human dignity and cultural diversity.
