About Us

The Barkly is a vast region with far-flung communities and a predominantly Indigenous population. From its base in Tennant Creek, Barkly Regional Arts seeks to promote visual arts, music and media in the region and support the continued preservation, presentation and creative development of the diverse cultures and language groups located here.

The Visual Arts Program supports three remote studios staffed by local indigenous arts workers, as well as other communities and homelands on request. Artists are provided with materials, artistic and professional development, marketing and sales support, and opportunities to travel to art fairs and events. The Visual Arts Team also creates opportunities for the Artists of the Barkly to collaborate with other stakeholders in the region to promote community cohesion and civic pride through the arts.

About the Role

Position Type: Full-time 3-month contract with view to extend for the right person

Location: Based in Tennant Creek with outreach to remote areas of the Barkly Region

Hours: 38hrs /week, M – F with occasional hours outside of this to be compensated by time-in-lieu

Pay rate: $55,000 – $60,000 commensurate with experience + super

Reports to: Visual Arts Manager

The Visual Arts Facilitator supports production, documentation, and sales of artworks by the Artists of Barkly collective; a group of Indigenous artists working from four Barkly Regional Arts’ facilitated studios in Tennant Creek and remote communities. The role has exposure to a wide range of activities within Barkly Regional Arts’ Visual Arts Team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure artworks are appropriately documented by cataloguing and photographing works to a high standard.
  • Support artistic practice by preparing art materials, making lunches, providing transport and contributing to a positive working environment.
  • Support the manager in the virtual and physical presentation of artworks by assisting with gallery hangs, managing the Artists of the Barkly website.
  • Assist with sales in the studio and online, including customer service, processing sales, preparing works for shipping.
  • Assist in collecting and recording stories of works.
  • Assist the Outreach Coordinator to prepare for weekly outreach trips to remote art centres supported by Barkly Arts by preparing materials and food.
  • Undertake weekly outreach trips to remote art centres on a weekly basis, including multi-night trips on a fortnightly basis.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have a positive and flexible outlook with an interest in art and art making. You are relationship focused and are able to build rapport with a diverse range of people, including those who may be dealing with difficult circumstances in their lives. Remote areas can include hot weather, dusty and dirty environments, and other challenging conditions, to which you will bring a sense of humour and a can-do attitude.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Experience in arts-related and/or hands-on creative roles.
  • Highly computer literate and are able to quickly adapt to using new software.
  • Strong writing skills and close attention to detail.
  • 4WD training or experience in driving off-road, or ability to undertake 4WD training if needed.
  • Manual driving licence or ability to quickly obtain is essential in this role.
  • Strong people skills and a conscientious attitude toward work.
  • Valid working with children’s check (ochre card).
  • Fully vaccinated against Covid 19.

Desirable

  • Experience in community development, social work, education settings, or anywhere that involves working directly with a diverse range of people.
  • Art handling experience.
  • Art industry qualifications including a degree in art history, museum management, art therapy, or a fine arts degree.
  • Ability to stretch canvas and mix paint.
  • Experience of living or working in remote Australia.
  • Experience working with a cataloguing system such as Stories Art Money or similar.
  • Experience working with Shopify.
  • Experience working with Abode Light Room Classic.
