About the Partner Organisation

The Samoa Meteorology Division (SMD) plays a vital role in protecting life, property and economic development in Samoa by providing effective weather, climate, geoscience and ozone advisory services. It also provides meteorological, geo-science, climate change advice to support the sustainable development of natural resources in Samoa. The responsibilities of the SMD with respect to 24/7 multi hazard early warning for Samoa includes provision of observation, forecasting and early warning services including meteorology and extreme weather, tsunamis storm surges and coastal flooding. SMD also provides tropical cyclone forecasts for Samoa.

The volunteer would provide technical support and assess the current situation related to tropical cyclone forecasting at SMD and identify any capacity, knowledge, and process gaps. They would support training and knowledge transfer to address those gaps and recommend actions needed going forward.

About the Position

  • You’ll be supporting the Meteorology Division to assess the current capacity and provide training where necessary.
  • You’ll need at least a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in physics, mathematics, geophysics and completion of a post-graduate meteorologist training course, exceeding meteorologist requirements as mentioned in the WMO 10831
  • You’ll gain experience working in the local meteorology office supporting the protection of the Pacific people.

Allowance: $2,027

The monthly living allowance enables you to live a modest local lifestyle. Based on the cost of living in a particular country, it covers food, your daily commute, communication and other local costs. It is not set to enable you to meet financial commitments at home, such as a mortgage or a personal loan.

Special requirements

A Federal Police Check must be completed during application and a First Aid Certificate will be required.
