Sanctuary Manager - Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary

Australian Wildlife Conservancy

~ Help shape the future of private sector conservation ~

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at30sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.
AWC’s mission - to deliver effective conservation for all native animal species and their habitats - is achieved by:

  • Operations -delivering effective large-scale land management including fire management, feral animal control, weed control and infrastructure management.
  • Science -delivering a nationally-coherent program of ecological surveys with a focus on monitoring key conservation assets and threats, conducting applied research relevant to wildlife conservation, implementing conservation programs including reintroductions, and providing advice to management.
  • Fundraising -mobilising finance (primarily, tax deductible donations) from the general public and philanthropists including through effective communication of AWC conservation programs.

OneAWC is defined as ‘a cohesive, engaged, collaborative, high performing group guided by strong, effective leaders. A group of people who all understand AWC’s mission, vision and their role in contributing to the achievement of mission and vision, all connected and working towards a common purpose, guided by a set of shared values’. The delivery of AWC’s mission is highly reliant on all AWC working collaboratively with each other.

In south-east Australia, AWC owns and manages six wildlife sanctuaries: Newhaven, Kalamurina, Yookamurra, Dakalanta, Buckaringa and Scotia. Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the heart of Australia and protects a vast area of desert on the shores of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Kalamurina covers a remarkable 679,000 hectares at the intersection of three of Australia’s central deserts: the Munga-Thirri-Simpson Desert, the Tirari Desert and Sturt’s Stony Desert. Kalamurina remains a stronghold for several threatened and declining mammals including the Crest-tailed Mulgara, a small carnivorous marsupial.

AWC is seeking an experienced land manager to take on the role of Sanctuary Manager based at Kalamurina. Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager- South-East, the successful candidate will require a knowledge of and have experience leading land management programs for conservation including fire, weed and feral animal control. The Sanctuary Manager should have experience in supervising staff, implementing OH&S procedures and some experience with budgets and operational planning.

Duties extend to asset and infrastructure maintenance and as such a broad knowledge of trades and practical skills in relation to asset and infrastructure repair and maintenance, and the ability to use a wide range of plant and equipment is beneficial.

The Sanctuary Manager will need to be capable of working in remote locations for an extended period whilst also having good interpersonal skills and be able to liaise with a wide range of people including land managers, scientists, students, volunteers, neighbouring landholders including Indigenous communities and government. Within AWC, the Operations and Science teams work in a tight integrated manner to design and deliver conservation and land management, and to measure and report on ecological health. The role of Sanctuary Manager will be committed to helping AWC develop and implement a new model for conservation and is expected to build and maintain professional working relationships within the SE region (and beyond).

The Kalamurina Sanctuary Manager and the Assistant Sanctuary Manager roles would be suited to two individuals known to each other as the provided on-site accommodation is a shared arrangement.

Based at Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary, this is a unique opportunity to join Australia’s largest non-government conservation organisation, and contribution to the future of wildlife conservation in Australia.
