~ Help shape the future of private sector conservation ~
Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner and manager of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife (alone or in partnership) across 30 sanctuaries, covering more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.
AWC’s mission - to deliver effective conservation for all native animal species and their habitats - is achieved by delivering practical land management (fire management, feral animal control and weed eradication), as well as threatened species reintroductions and strategic conservation science. Fundraising, primarily tax deductible donations from the general public and philanthropists, enables our work.
4 of the 30 sanctuaries - Karakamia, Paruna, Faure Island and Mount Gibson - occur in southwestern Australia, an internationally recognised “biodiversity hotspot”.
Mount Gibson is a large property (over 130,000 ha) that lies within a transition zone between the eucalypt-dominated southwestern Botanical Province and the mulga-dominated Eremaean Botanical Province, and consequently the property has rich flora. In 2013 AWC launched the Mount Gibson Endangered Wildlife Restoration Project, which involved establishing a 7,800 ha feral predator-free area at Mount Gibson. This is the largest fox and cat-free area on mainland WA. Since September 2015, eight endangered mammal species have been reintroduced to the feral predator-free area.
AWC is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Feral Animal Control/Land Management Officer to be based at Mount Gibson (approximately 4 ½ hours NE of Perth near Wubin). The position is for 12 months initially with possible extension. This position will support the implementation of a range of land management programs (fire management including prescribed burning and wildfire suppression, feral animal control and weed management).
This is an exciting opportunity to carry out land management that is closely integrated with comprehensive science and monitoring programs on Australia’s largest wildlife restoration project, reintroducing nine of Australia’s most endangered mammals back into habitat where they were previously regionally extinct.
The successful candidates will work alongside other AWC land management and science staff, researchers and volunteers. You will work closely with the land management team to support ongoing fire management, feral animal control, weed management and visitor management programs.
Based at Mount Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary, this position is offered on a 10:4 arrangement with the opportunity to travel to Perth (or surrounding) during days off. Whilst on sanctuary, basic, on-site single accommodation will be provided.
This is a unique opportunity to join Australia’s largest non-government conservation organisation, and contribute to the future of wildlife conservation in Australia.
