The Australian Copyright Council is an independent, not-for-profit, community legal service representing the peak bodies for professional artists and content creators working in Australia’s creative industries. We work to promote understanding of copyright law and its application, foster collaboration between content creators and users, and advocate for the protection of creator rights and interests in Australia.

The job

We are looking for a Sydney-based lawyer (1 year + PAE) with a working knowledge of Australian copyright law to join the Council’s legal team in providing legal advice, delivering webinars and training, maintaining Council publications and assisting in the Council’s advocacy initiatives.

The role is full-time, but we welcome applications from more senior lawyers to work on a fractional basis.

who you are

You have at least 1 year’s post admission experience with an intellectual property focus, ideally in copyright with (or eligible for), a current NSW practising certificate.

You are a confident presenter, ready to deliver copyright law training to creators and users.

You enjoy writing and are a collaborative, hands-on team player, happy to work autonomously and flexibly in a small, pet friendly office with no time sheets!

The lawyer's responsibilities include:

  • providing copyright law advice as part of the Council's free written legal advice service
  • reviewing existing, or drafting new, copyright publications including fact sheets and books
  • preparing and conducting copyright training online and face to face
  • assisting with the preparation of government or other submissions.

Skills and knowledge required include:

  • ability to provide clear and concise legal advice
  • knowledge of copyright law and related areas, or an ability to acquire such knowledge quickly
  • ability to work in an efficient and organised manner as part of a team
  • excellent presentation and written communication skills.

Additional desirable skills include:

  • interest and experience in writing for publications, and
  • experience in teaching or training.

Qualifications:

Admission as an Australian legal practitioner.
