About the Program:

The Navigator Program, a Department of Education initiative, offers intensive case management and assertive outreach support to young people disengaged from education. In partnership with Uniting Gippsland, the Department of Education, East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative (GEGAC), and the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF), the program employs a trauma-informed, culturally safe assertive case management model. This collaborative effort focuses on re-engaging students in education through comprehensive services, including case management, mental health support, trauma-informed education assessments, active hold services, and training for school staff.

About the Role:

ACF is seeking an enthusiastic Educational Therapeutic Specialist for a fixed-term part-time position until December 31, 2024. This role will be located in Sale and Bairnsdale with travel across the Outer Gippsland region. In this role you will be instrumental in providing therapeutic parenting support to carers of young people in the program, to support their re-engagement into education. Educational Needs assessments and trauma-informed classroom coaching will also be provided as required to support educators, in creating safe and nurturing therapeutic learning environments for young people who find it challenging to engage in school settings.

About you - Key Selection Criteria:

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma, attachment and neurobiology frameworks and theories.
  • Knowledge of and expertise in delivering a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions to children, young people and their families in an educational context.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively and positively within a team environment.
  • Highly developed ability to provide secondary consultation and advice to clinicians and other professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively, maintain effective relationships and partnerships, and the capacity to negotiate and liaise with individuals who make up the network of support around children and young people, including their families, carers, Department of Education, child protection, other agencies and the community.
  • A current driver's licence and Working with Children Check or equivalent.
