The office of Queensland Greens Senator Penny Allman-Payne is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Media Advisor, based in the Senator’s electorate office in Gladstone, Central Queensland. 

About the position

Greens Senator for Queensland Penny Allman-Payne is seeking a Media Advisor for a full-time ongoing contract. The role is based in Gladstone in Central Queensland.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, you will be required to travel to Canberra, within Queensland and interstate to provide media support to the Senator during sitting weeks, budget estimates and other parliamentary business.

Gladstone is a regional centre about 75 minutes south of Rockhampton and an hour north of Agnes Water/1770. As the gateway to the southern Great Barrier Reef and surrounded by beautiful national parks, Gladstone is a great place to live for people who enjoy the outdoors and all the benefits that come with living outside capital cities.

The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide media and messaging advice, strategy and implementation.
  • Liaise with media (field requests, develop and manage relationships with journalists, producers etc), including Press Gallery and national contacts, Queensland media and regional media on all Queensland travel.
  • Proactively develop stories and pitches to a wide variety of media in print, online and broadcast.
  • Write and distribute media releases, statements, media packs, and opinion articles.
  • Proactively monitor news coverage and social media discourse to identify and respond to emerging issues, media trends, and potential opportunities or risks.
  • Prepare, develop and manage media events such as media conferences and joint media events, and brief the Senator as required.
  • Produce social media content in consultation with the Senator and with assistance from relevant members of the team.
  • Assist with correspondence, constituent advocacy and casework as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace, contribute to a safe and respectful workplace culture, and abide by work health and safety laws, policies and procedures.
  • Undertake training as directed, including induction and safe and respectful workplace training.
  • Participate in regular meetings with others to review progress and provide/receive feedback.
  • Other tasks as directed by the Senator or Chief of Staff.

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

  • Experience in media relations, strategic communications, or journalism, preferably within a political or advocacy setting.
  • Strong understanding of the Australian political system, the political and media landscape and the issues shaping the national debate.
  • Highly developed organisational and time management skills, including flexibility and ability to meet tight deadlines and evolving priorities as part of a small team.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Experience in developing and implementing media strategies and proactive media.
  • Excellent writing skills. Examples attached to your application are encouraged, including writing for media audiences.
  • Basic video production and editing skills and an ability to quickly learn new applications.
  • An ability to work as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • An ability to work some irregular hours and to travel interstate as required.
  • A commitment to and understanding of Australian Greens values and policies.

 Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:

  • A commencing salary between $71,808 and $76,022, plus an additional electorate allowance of up to $26,844, will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

Applicants should note the following:

  • An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
  • The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
  • Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
  • The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
