about the opportunity

  • Duty Lawyer ability assumed, hearings expertise will be an added bonus for us and you can build this capacity within 1 year subject to your talent
  • Youth jurisdiction enthusiasm, and ability to work with our Indigenous Court Support/Field Staff to aid with community connections is important
  • We will consider a part-time or job-shared role towards full-time in early months with us - flexible conditions apply full-time as does paid overtime for unsociable hours on-call (in a roster) services
  • Cairns - some community circuits may be involved - such as to Cooktown, Yarrabah, with possible overnight circuits to Cape York if experienced and after being well established.
  • Salary ranges upon experience, interview outcome, admission date, autonomy capacity (including ability to mentor others and be mentored). A range of $96 - $140k package including Superannuation is estimated.

To be successful, you will need demonstrated advocacy skills, commitment to Indigenous justice, and court acumen.

Your experience with both Duty Lawyer type responsibilities, and Hearings will be a distinct advantage for the Criminal Law roles (2), as will provision of service in the youth jurisdiction.

Practising Certificate (or ability to promptly acquire one) is essential.
