We have a great opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our amazing Health team, supporting people seeking asylum in Australia. You will work with a small team of Nurses to provide health assessments and ongoing health management support for people seeking asylum. The role works within a nurse-led model and in collaboration with other ASC Services and Engagement programs and agency partners in the sector.
This is a permanent, part-time position, working 2 days per week based in Newtown. Ideally, the successful applicant will be available to work Monday and Tuesday.
Responsibilities
- Conduct health screenings within a nurse-led model, using standardised assessment tools
- Coordinate and provide care for individuals/families in partnership with GP’s and relevant agencies, including follow-up, advocacy and case management of health referrals/cases
- Coordinate health care planning with individuals and link with appropriate internal/external health professionals
- Promote social connection and integration through referrals to established support services and programs
- Regularly provide advice and up-to-date health information to ASC staff and people seeking asylum, with the goal of improving and promoting health literacy
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers in other ASC service delivery programs
- Liaise and regularly communicate with a wider network of health support systems - including but not limited to: interpreter services, specialist services, GP’s, allied and community health, mental health, torture and trauma counsellors, radiology and pathology
- Maintain effective relationships with specialist refugee and asylum seeker support agencies
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with local health districts, primary health networks and other mainstream health providers.
Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
Essential
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in clinical nursing
- Current AHPRA nursing registration
- Demonstrated clinical assessment skills
- Ability to work independently & within a multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to work with clients within a trauma-informed care framework
- Effective communication skills, including report writing, negotiation and conflict resolution
- Experience working with interpreters in a cross-cultural environment
- Commitment to social justice and issues of access and equity in health
- Intermediate to advanced computer literacy
- Venipuncture skills
- Demonstrated experience with wound management, minor procedures and external referrals
- Experience liaising with doctors, nursing staff and multidisciplinary ASC teams
- Experience contributing to the general management of practice
Desirable
- Lived experience as a refugee or person seeking asylum
- Understanding of the complex issues faced by people seeking asylum in Australia
- Experience working with people with mental health conditions
- Immunisation certificate
- Experience with cold chain management
- Bilingual or multilingual skills
