The ASU Victorian Private Sector Branch is a progressive, active and growing Union. We are committed to organising members to grow their Union and win campaigns that make a real difference for workers, contributing to a fairer society. Based in Carlton South, the Branch is seeking to appoint a Membership Officer to support the Branch’s membership team and general office administration to best support our members.

The role is a member service focused role that involves engagement with members including emailing, calling, texting, and providing advice. We’re looking for a good communicator and someone who is comfortable with new technologies. The role will also include data entry and administrative support.

This position provides an excellent pathway for those wanting to start out in unions or industrial support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regular in and outbound communication with members including by phone and email.

  • Provide members with information about the benefits of their Union membership.

  • Maintain and update and member database details accurately.

  • Identify and resolve issues for members.

  • Provide accurate and relevant information and advice to members on industrial rights and entitlements.

  • Understand the differences between individually driven issues and collectively driven issues.

  • Identify disputes that have organising opportunities or the potential for collective action in the workplace.

  • Process new membership forms.

  • Respond to and resolve membership enquiries and issues.

  • Assist with accounts payable and receivable functions, including payroll deductions.

  • Administrative support and reception duties in support of the Branch and Branch Secretary.

Selection criteria:

  • Demonstrated commitment to trade Union principles.
  • Member focused interpersonal skills with a positive attitude.
  • High level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven customer service experience.
  • High level of knowledge and competency in Microsoft Office software, and comfort using new technologies.
  • Ability to accurately record information.
  • A high level of attention to detail, administrative and organisational skills.
  • Ability to perform work within specified timelines and operate in a fast pace environment.
  • A customer service orientation, and ability to adjust work practices to meet the needs of the union and its member.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work autonomously.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.

Position and salary:

The role is advertised as a full-time 5 day per week role, although applications for 3 days or more will be considered.

Salary is in accordance with the union's salary bands, from $76,766 to $85,357 (full-time) subject to experience, plus 16% superannution. Full-time staff also receive a monthly RDO.
