About Us

Arafmi is the peak body for unpaid mental health carers in Queensland, provides free services for mental health carers in Queensland, and advocates for systemic reforms.  We have over 45 years' experience and are passionate about making a difference to the lives of people and their families and carers.

The Carer Support Team provides a dedicated support service to mental health carers across Queensland. This consists of 24/7 telephone support, one-to-one coaching, support groups, a carer education program, events, respite, stakeholder engagement and participation and engagement with Carer Gateway programs.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced community sector manager with a passion for the mental health sector, who can hit the ground running to establish and lead a state-wide team delivering support to carers through the Carer Gateway program.

You will be able to play a key role in system advocacy, ensuring diversity and influencing policy to effect positive change for carers.

This role is predominately a Monday to Friday operation however there will be the occasional need to work outside of these hours to support the successful coordination and operation of the services.

You will:

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Carer Gateway Support team at Arafmi to deliver meaningful and timely supports to carers.
  • Foster an effective, skilled and cohesive team with a culture of collaboration, participation and open communication.
  • Plan, direct and evaluate service delivery to ensure services delivered within the program comply with relevant Acts, service agreements, contracts and quality standards.
  • Provide advice, analysis and advocacy on policy, service issues, service development and continuous improvement that effect mental health carers.
  • Work collaboratively with the Carer Support Team Manager and team to grow, plan and deliver individual and group programs across the state.
  • Actively engage with carers and stakeholders to educate, establish referral pathways and expand the program and partnerships.

About You

We are looking for someone with a positive mindset, who wants to lead a team where collaboration and customer focus are key to our success.

You must have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the mental health and disability support sectors.
  • Thorough understanding of the caring role, understand trauma informed practice, and best practice carer supports that enable carers to sustain their caring role and enhance their wellbeing.
  • Strong leadership, case management and group facilitation skills, (ideally within service delivery environments).
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex projects within community-based support services.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively at all levels.
  • Ability to build strong, respectful relationships that promote capacity and resilience through periods of complex challenges.

Desirable experience:

  • Previous experience providing Carer Gateway funded programs.
  • Formal qualifications are not essential for this role as Arafmi recognises that there are multiple barriers to people accessing formal education and that life and work experience can often offer as much value, however, the role will require a high level of skills and knowledge similar to those gained through formal study at a degree level.

  • A Current driver's licence and access to use of a personal motor vehicle.
  • NDIS/Yellow/Blue Card (or the ability to obtain one).
  • A satisfactory national police check.
  • The ability to work in an On Call roster.
