The Public Affairs Manager is responsible for driving APNA’s Advocacy Strategy including government relations, policy, representation activity and strategic stakeholder engagement. You will lead and grow a team that includes policy, communications and data analytics capabilities, as well as great spokespeople.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the advocacy team to implement a Corporate Affairs Strategy, garnering internal and external stakeholder support
  • Lead the development and implementation of advocacy campaigns, including use of APNA communication channels and representation groups to drive policy change
  • Proactive media engagement and thought leadership positioning APNA as an expert in primary health care nursing
  • Provide advice and briefings on matters related to engagement with Commonwealth, state and territory governments and other external governance bodies as it relates to primary health care nursing
  • Act as a spokesperson for APNA, including strategic committees, lobbying and media
  • Keep abreast of the political and policy environment; identify and manage opportunities to advance APNA’s advocacy objectives
  • Provide briefings and high-quality reports to the executive and the Board on the advocacy and government relations strategies
  • Coach and manage the advocacy team, including prioritising work and ensuring high-quality delivery

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Substantive government relations and advocacy experience
  • Well-developed understanding of government processes, the policy cycle, the political landscape and political stakeholders
  • Experience developing and leading advocacy and government relations strategies and campaigns
  • Ability to navigate an environment of change and ambiguity to identify potential solutions
  • High level communication skills, including strategic negotiation
  • Excellent writing skills with experience in preparing strategic documents for executive external and internal audiences
  • Tertiary qualification in a public/health policy, political science, legal, communications or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role

Desirable experience

  • Previous experience in a departmental or political staffer role
  • Post-graduate qualifications in policy or political science
  • Previous experience with media, including acting as a media spokesperson
  • Previous experience in health care or with a health peak body

Remuneration package based on skills and experience. As a charitable organisation, APNA offers salary packaging.

Note the position is part-time (0.6 FTE but open to negotiation for the right candidate). Listed remuneration based on 1.0FTE equivalence.
