We are looking for an exceptional Lead Organiser to service our membership in New South Wales and to contribute to PA’s broader leadership team, working collaboratively with directors in other states/territories and other functional areas so that we grow and strengthen our membership in existing and new workplaces and industry sectors in New South Wales.

Role description

The Lead Organiser will be responsible for:

  • Driving change and enhancing performance.
  • Contributing to PA’s leadership team, strategic planning, and building a collaborative and productive workplace culture.
  • Developing and delivering a state plan that supports PA’s overall strategic plan, especially with respect to organising and industrial strategies and campaigns.
  • Working closely and collaboratively with PA’s elected officials and committees and providing information, reports, and support as required.
  • Developing, coaching, and mentoring delegates
  • Representing PA in a range of forums, consultative bodies and working parties.
  • Representing members in industrial commissions and courts.
  • Negotiating workplace pay and conditions and resolving workplace issues and disputes.
  • Managing relationships with unions, employer representatives, industry, and government agencies
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, and PA’s policies and procedures.

Skills and experience

We are seeking a Lead Organiser who has:

  • Expert knowledge of the issues impacting members in their allocated areas of work.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of organising frameworks, tools and concepts and ability to apply them effectively in existing and to new areas of work.
  • Advanced understanding of applicable industrial instruments and ability to provide high levels of assistance and representation to members on complex employment-related matters including grievances, performance reviews, disciplinary matters, major workplace changes and the application of agreements and enterprise bargaining processes.
  • Experience working across both State and Federal Industrial systems.
  • Expert ability to identify industrial issues that PA can organise around to build membership in existing and new areas of work.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills, including for example, the ability to present on PA matters at an industry level, within the workplace, and draft correspondence, and detailed reports.
  • Expert negotiating and advocacy skills.
  • Expert in building effective relationships with PA members, workplace delegates, other unions, management representatives and relevant stakeholders
  • Expert ability to analyse membership and recruitment issues and develop strategies to address these, selecting the methods and techniques based on experience and judgement.
  • Ability to develop capacity in less experienced organisers.
  • Ability to translate strategic planning into operational planning
  • Demonstrated commitment to union values and integrity.
  • A ROE permit or ability to obtain one.
  • A current driver’s licence.

Salary and conditions

An attractive remuneration package is available which is negotiable based on experience.

The position is based at Level 1, 491 Kent Street, Sydney, but will be relocated to Unions NSW in Sussex Street, Sydney, in early June. However, hybrid working arrangements exist, including working-from-home options.
