The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago. The ALC is a ‘future-forward’ Land Council, directed by the 14 clans of the Groote Archipelago region, enabling the Anindilyakwa people to take full advantage of the opportunities and technology available in the 21st century, while simultaneously preserving land, language and culture.

The ALC functions to ascertain and express the wishes and opinions of the Anindilyakwa people as to the management of the land and sea in the Groote archipelago region, protecting the interests of the Traditional Owners, assisting in the protection of sacred sites, assist the Anindilyakwa people in traditional land claims, negotiation with persons desiring to obtain an estate or interest in the land, assist Traditional Owners in carrying out commercial activity, and supervise and provide administrative and other assistance for Land Trusts holding Indigenous land in the Groote archipelago region.

The vision of the ALC is to:

  • Protect, maintain and promote Anindilyakwa culture;
  • Invest in the present to build a self-sufficient future;
  • And, create pathways for youth to stand in both worlds.

About the Role

This is an Applied Anthropology position. You will be required to undertake the processing of development applications.

The position will require that the successful applicant:

  • Work collaboratively with the male anthropologist and other ALC staff
  • Work as part of a team
  • Undertake consultations with male and female Traditional Owners to protect sites of cultural significance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct remote area fieldwork to safeguard culturally significant sites on the Anindilyakwa Land Trust.
  • Prepare detailed research reports for Native Title applications and settlements, including projects with GEMCO and other parties.
  • Offer expert advice on Anindilyakwa law and customs, both historical and contemporary.
  • Collaborate with the Anthropology team and other stakeholders.
  • Liaise with the Northern Land Council regarding the Groote Seas Native Title Application.
  • Conduct and maintain genealogical research related to Anindilyakwa people.
  • Manage and oversee cultural research projects on the Anindilyakwa Land Trust as needed.
  • Process applications for the use of Anindilyakwa Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Knowledge.
  • Research, document, and preserve cultural information about Anindilyakwa society.
  • Locate and facilitate the repatriation of culturally significant objects from national and international institutions.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices in applied anthropological research.

Selection Criteria Essential

  • Undergraduate degree in Anthropology.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Applied Anthropology, in remote settings.
  • Proven ability to apply Participatory Development principles in remote areas.
  • Experience leading and managing multidisciplinary field teams.
  • Demonstrated skills in conducting and documenting site protection fieldwork under the Northern Territory Sacred Sites Act.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Experience with computer programs
  • The ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive matters.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with the NT Aboriginal Land Rights Act (1976) and the Native Title Act (1993).
  • Strong field experience, with the ability to connect with and work respectfully with Aboriginal communities.
  • A deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, and the social challenges impacting remote communities in the NT.
  • Post graduate training and remote area field experience within Community Development Projects.
