We are looking for a dynamic Lead Organiser to work in the AMWU NSW Southern Region, who will demonstrate a high level of organising, mentoring and industrial experience.

This role focuses on finding a Team Leader who will structure team activities, mentor team members, plan, set goals, and review progress, with a strong emphasis on growth targets, accurate record-keeping, and the use of union tools to track progress and make data-driven decisions. You will also maintain your own union workshops.

We are looking for a Lead Organiser with the following skills, who can:

  • Model Team Collaboration & Communication: Ability to model working effectively supporting the organiser team, attending meetings, contributing to discussions, and collaborating with the team to develop clear, achievable work plans.
  • Plan & Set Goals: Strong organisational skills to develop, implement, adapt and review work plans with clear goals, timeframes, and measurable targets.
  • Progress Monitoring, Mentoring & Review: Ability to track and assess progress on work plans, review results with team, and adjust plans accordingly. Ability to mentor, support and train team members.
  • Data Analysis & Database Use: Proficient in using tools like the Union Membership databases to identify areas of focus and improve membership records.
  • Delegation & Training: Ability to set quantifiable targets for growth areas like recruitment, delegate training, and financiality, and track progress toward these targets.
  • Prioritisation & Time Management: Advanced skills in prioritising tasks and managing time effectively, especially in fast-paced and high-pressure environments.
  • Technical Tools Usage: Proficient in using Outlook Calendar, union systems, and planning templates for tracking goals, workplace visits, and growth indicators.
  • Strategic Organising & Mobilisation: Ability to organise and mobilise members across diverse industries and occupations in complex and/or new environments.
  • Research & Planning: Capable of conducting in-depth research and mapping to independently plan and execute complex organising or campaign plans.
  • Negotiation & Representation: High-level negotiation skills and the ability to represent individuals or groups in complex matters.
  • Political, Industrial & Community Campaigning: Expertise in planning and leading political, industrial, and community campaigns.
  • Industrial Knowledge: High level of industrial knowledge and the ability to apply it to organising efforts.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Modelling leadership skills, encouraging team participation & contribution: Experience in leading team meetings, mentoring other organisers, helping to develop work plans, and working towards meeting team goals.
  • Organising & Recruitment: Demonstrated experience (at least 5yrs) in setting targets and working to achieve growth in specific areas such as recruitment, delegate density, and training.
  • Workplace Visits & Record Keeping: Experience conducting workplace visits, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring that union systems are updated and current.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work Plan Development & Implementation: Collaborate with Organisers to create clear work plans with achievable goals and deadlines. Work consistently to implement these plans throughout the quarter.
  • Plan Review & Adjustments: Review progress on work plans Organisers at the end of each quarter, assessing achievements and adjusting plans for the following period.
  • Tracking & Reporting: Set measurable targets around recruitment, delegate density, financiality, and training, and track progress using union tools like the Union membership databases.
  • Workplace Visits: Conduct workplace visits, ensuring records are accurately completed and verified in union systems.
  • Training & Development: Attend at least one union training course based on identified needs to improve skills and knowledge for the role. Encourage and mentor Organisers within your team
  • Record Improvement: Work on improving the union’s membership records, such as ensuring accurate details on agreements, email addresses, and site information.
  • Target Site Identification: Identify target sites for recruitment and growth, tracking them on union systems to monitor progress.

You will be based in the Wollongong area, though you may be required to travel in the greater Southern Region.
