We are seeking a talented and experienced Communications Officer to join our AMWU NSW Communications Team and help tell the stories that matter to union members across New South Wales.
This is an exciting opportunity for a creative communications professional who is passionate about engaging audiences, producing high-quality content, and supporting campaigns that deliver real outcomes for working people. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing compelling written, visual and digital communications that strengthen member engagement, support workplace campaigns, and advance the union's objectives.
Working across a diverse range of projects, you will create content for multiple platforms, including social media, websites, email campaigns, publications, video, photography, and printed materials. You will collaborate closely with union officials, members, campaign teams and stakeholders to ensure our communications are timely, effective, and aligned with our values.
Your responsibilities will include:
Written and Visual Content Creation
- Develop engaging content for various platforms, including articles, videos, graphics, social media, internal and external newsletters, printed core collateral materials – e.g. brochures, posters and flyers, and designing merchandise.
Digital Media Asset Development and Management
- Contribute to the planning and execution of the union's strategy for digital presence, including social media platforms and the union's website, ensuring consistent messaging and engagement with audiences. Deliver on planned social media, creating content and managing campaigns on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, TikTok, Youtube, and LinkedIn.
Campaign Support
- Develop communications for campaigns and community engagement, ensuring consistent messaging across channels.
Media Engagement
- Assist in crafting press releases and media messaging, ensuring that key union issues are communicated to the public and the media.
Email and Outreach
- Design and execute email and text campaigns through tools, targeting specific members or audiences with relevant information. Experience in automated marketing communications such as member journeys.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely and collaboratively with other team members and support the broader communications objectives of the AMWU.

Written Communication
- Excellent ability to write clear, engaging and accurate content that translates complex information into accessible language for various audiences and platforms. Excellent skills in proofing and attention to detail. Creative thinker with the ability to recognise compelling stories, generate engaging content that resonates with audiences, and demonstrated ability to tailor copy that aligns with the purpose of the communications. Quick ability to accept feedback and make adjustments.
Digital Media Content Creation and Management
- Proficient understanding and analysis of the digital media landscape, including social media platforms and online communication strategies. Excellent skills in quality digital content creation and ability to manage digital assets. Good understanding of analytics and evaluation to facilitate ongoing improvement of communications.
Graphic Design
- Excellent skills in graphic design for digital platforms, printed materials and other promotional items/core collateral. Strong skills in using the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) for digital content creation.
Photography and Video Skills
- Proficient skills in capturing and editing high-quality photography and video. Creative ability to edit photography and video in post-production in Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
Time Management and Planning
- Strong ability to forward plan and meet both short- and long-term deadlines, ensuring timely delivery of content and campaigns. Actively seek feedback and work on improving communication skills, progressing toward a more independent role.
Mass-Mailing Systems
- Highly competent in using mass-mailing systems and integrated marketing platforms such as IMIS, Higher Logic, Yabbr and MailChimp for email campaigns and communications outreach.
Media Engagement
- Ability to craft effective media messaging, press releases, and engage with media outlets to promote union issues.
Campaign Communication
- Advanced skills in developing communication strategies for union campaigns. Good ability to deliver multi-channel communications in social, industrial and political union campaigns.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Reliable skills in stakeholder engagement. Proficient ability to communicate confidentially and respectfully with union members, employees, officials, and external parties. Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with a diverse range of internal stakeholders.
Your salary will be $112k + 13% superannuation, with one Rostered Day off per month.
Some regional travel may be required.
