The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union is a union of workers from diverse industries and occupations – campaigning for economic, industrial and social justice.
The AMWU prides itself on bold, member-led campaigns, like ‘Streets-Free Summer’ and ‘Boycott CUB’.
We are looking for an energetic and principled unionist to join our team.
ON A TYPICAL DAY, YOU’LL BE:
- Creating content for social media;
- Building and supporting community, industrial and political campaigns;
- Preparing written material for members and external stakeholders;
- Organising engaging events and content for members;
- Managing and updating our website;
- Working with our industrial staff to provide best-practice communications to our members;
- Creating leaflets, posters and merchandise for our member-led industrial campaigns;
- Supporting our workplace leaders to develop workplace campaigns; and
- Developing campaigning and communications priorities with the NSW State Secretary.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about member-led trade unionism. Ideally, you’ll have worked with unions or in the NGO sector before. You’ll have experience in digital and / or field campaigning, design and written communications.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful applicant will:
- Develop and execute communications and media strategy, under the direction of the NSW State Secretary;
- Event organisation and management;
- Develop and distribute content to increase the union’s social media engagement;
- Work with stakeholders to develop and support the branch’s industrial, community, and political campaigning efforts; and
- Support the campaign work of the NSW Secretary and Organisers.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Experience in working in the media, communications and / or campaigns field, preferably in a trade union, political or not-for-profit organisation;
- A sound understanding of Australia’s industrial and political environment; and
- Experience in using social media for campaign purposes, including developing content and multimedia and growing and maintaining a Facebook community.
Highly Desirable
- Nationbuilder website and email experience;
- Proficiency in Adobe suite design software including InDesign and Illustrator; and
- Proficiency in video shooting and editing and for social media.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- Understanding of the Australian union movement and the Australian political environment;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute successful media and campaign strategies;
- Ability to multi-task and prioritise work flow in a busy environment;
- Capacity to problem solve, exercise judgement and manage a variety of stakeholders;
- Ability to work independently, to plan ahead and be pro-active;
- Ability to work with a range of people and manage competing interests;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
- Ability to manage time and budgets.
Other information
- A driver’s license is highly desirable; and
- May require regional and interstate travel.
Salary and Package commensurate with experience.
