Job: 1632301 | 1 Full-Time Position & 1 Part-Time Position Available | Fixed-Term (December 2027) | Redfern, NSW  | Up to $125,719 (Based on Experience)

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a valued member of the Policy and Law Reform team, you’ll play a key role in policy development aiming to transform systems impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in NSW. You will contribute to the delivery of two reform projects under a landmark partnership agreement between the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), AbSec and ALS to review and reform several child protection policies. Each day, you will:

  • Undertake research and critically analyse policies impacting Aboriginal families, including child protection and Closing the Gap reforms.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including ACCOs, government and non-government organisations.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings, workshops and forums with project partners and sector stakeholders.
  • Engage with Aboriginal communities and services supporting families within the child safety and wellbeing system to inform policy and practice.
  • Develop and maintain policy knowledge, uphold ethical standards, and contribute to collaborative team practice.
  • Support preparation of briefings, submissions and project updates, integrating evidence, data and community insights.

  • Strong understanding of child protection legislation, systems and reform.
  • Commitment to advancing the rights, aspirations and outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Proven research, policy analysis and problem-solving skills, with the ability to produce high-quality policy outputs.
  • Excellent written, verbal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently and deliver outcomes.
  • Demonstrated cultural capability, including respect for and understanding of Aboriginal cultures, communities and ways of working.
