THE DEPARTMENT

Alfred Mental and Addiction Health is responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

Services are provided by a number of teams located at the Alfred Hospital (Commercial Road, Prahran) and at St Kilda Road Clinic in St Kilda, Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC) in South Yarra, Alma Road CCU (ARCC) in St. Kilda, the Child & Adolescent Service located in Moorabbin and Aged Psychiatry based at Caulfield Hospital. Alfred Mental and Addiction Health also works in partnership with relevant local non-government and social support agencies.

POSITION SUMMARY

The key role of this position includes establishing mutually beneficial support to consumers admitted to Alfred Mental and Addiction Health Inpatient Unit. This position aims to provide peer worker access over the weekends and one week day. The position sits within a larger peer team within the IPU and will focus effort on weekend activity and engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Formal qualifications are not mandatory for this role but may be helpful (Certificate IV in Peer Work, Cert IV in Mental Health, Intentional Peer Support training)
  • Lived experience of your own mental challenges and a rich understanding of your own processes of recovery that inspires hope and belief in recovery
  • To work on weekends and outside traditional "9-5" working hours
  • A willingness to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery
  • Be able to articulate the guiding principles, values and ethics of peer support work
