The position

The Director, Initial Teacher Education is an established senior position, responsible for leading a team and range of projects that focus on improving the quality of initial teacher education (ITE) nationally. In addition, the Director will contribute to the organisation’s overall strategic direction as a member of the AITSL leadership team.

The team’s work is dynamic and includes development of policy advice, engaging with a range of senior stakeholders and managing multiple projects. Some examples of the team’s current responsibilities include working to implement rigorous accreditation of teacher education courses, supporting implementation of teaching performance assessments and building an evidence base on what works best in teacher education.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for an engaging leader, who is experienced in working within the education sector and managing complex stakeholder relationships. Tertiary qualified, with extensive experience in public policy related to education, you are a dynamic and resilient leader who loves diversity and complexity in their work.

You can identify and seize opportunity and confidently lead a team to achieve a goal while mitigating risk, reviewing progress and making mid-course corrections when required.

AITSL is a public company based in Melbourne. We are funded by the Australian Government. The Commonwealth Minister for Education and Training is the sole member of the company.

As a national body, we were established to promote excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership. We work with the education community to improve student learning by:

• Defining and maintaining standards for initial teacher education, teachers and principals;
• Leading and influencing improvement and reform in initial teacher education, teaching and school leadership;
• Supporting, recognising and extending high quality, high impact professional practice.
