Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) is seeking an experienced and passionate professional to join our organisation in a full-time role, reporting to the Director, Medical Workforce Development.

AIDA is the national body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors and medical students, focused on equitable health and life outcomes for Indigenous people. We do this by working towards population parity of Indigenous medical students and doctors, and supporting a culturally safe healthcare system.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director, Medical Workforce Development, the Program Lead – Medical Workforce Social and Emotional Wellbeing is responsible for leading the development, implementation and continuous improvement of programs and initiatives that support the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students, doctors-in-training, specialists and medical leaders.

The role works across the medical education and training continuum to strengthen culturally safe environments, improve wellbeing outcomes, build resilience, and address systemic challenges that impact the experiences, retention and success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in medicine.

Working collaboratively with medical colleges, universities, health services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, government agencies and other stakeholders, the Program Lead will deliver evidence-informed initiatives that advance culturally safe workforce development and contribute to a thriving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical workforce.

Key Responsibilities

As Program Lead – Medical Workforce Social and Emotional Wellbeing, you will:

  • Lead the design, delivery and evaluation of programs and initiatives that promote social and emotional wellbeing across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical workforce.
  • Translate organisational priorities into practical program activities, annual workplans, funded deliverables and measurable outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students, doctors, specialist trainees, Fellows and workforce stakeholders.
  • Identify emerging wellbeing challenges and opportunities across the medical education and training pathway and develop responsive strategies and initiatives.
  • Provide advice and guidance on culturally safe approaches to wellbeing, support and workforce participation.
  • Collaborate with medical colleges, universities, health services, professional organisations and community stakeholders to strengthen support structures and referral pathways.
  • Contribute to policy development, advocacy initiatives and sector-wide discussions relating to workforce wellbeing, cultural safety and health equity.
  • Coordinate monitoring, evaluation and reporting activities to demonstrate program effectiveness and support continuous improvement.
  • Ensure programs are delivered in accordance with funding agreements, governance requirements, risk management frameworks and organisational policies.
  • Represent AIDA in relevant meetings, forums, working groups and stakeholder engagements.
  • Contribute to a positive, culturally safe and high-performing organisational culture that reflects AIDA's values and strategic priorities.

About You

You are a collaborative and values-driven professional with experience delivering wellbeing, workforce development, health or community programs. You are passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing and are committed to strengthening culturally safe environments within the healthcare system.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in public health, psychology, social work, health promotion, community development, education, Indigenous health or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Demonstrated experience in program management, workforce development, wellbeing programs, health promotion, community engagement or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of social and emotional wellbeing frameworks and the factors that influence wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations and stakeholders in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
  • Proven ability to coordinate and deliver multiple projects and program activities while managing competing priorities.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, presentations, briefing materials and funding acquittals.
  • Experience monitoring and evaluating program outcomes and preparing reports for stakeholders and funders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, cultural safety and health equity.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications in public health, wellbeing, psychology, health leadership, community development or a related field.
  • Experience working in medical education, health workforce development, professional membership organisations or the not-for-profit sector.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths-based and culturally responsive wellbeing approaches.
  • Experience supporting evaluation, research activities or quality improvement initiatives.
