About this role
The Australian Greens Victoria (AGV) is committed to strengthening First Nations representation and participation within our movement. We’re currently looking for a First Nations person to support and coordinate the activities of the Blak Greens Victoria — the First Nations Network for members of the AGV.
You will play a key part in growing First Nations membership within the AGV, supporting First Nations members to engage at all levels of the party, and ensuring meaningful consultation on
First Nations affairs and policies. The First Nations Organiser will work closely with Blak Greens members and Office Bearers, other staff, and party leadership figures to foster an inclusive and empowering environment for First Nations political engagement.
If you’re a First Nations person who thrives on grassroots organising and wants to increase First Nations representation in progressive politics, we encourage you to apply.
The Victorian Greens strongly encourage people with diverse lived experience to apply for all roles, even if you feel your professional experience doesn’t match all of the selection criteria. The Greens recognise that structural barriers make it difficult for some people to obtain roles, even in progressive organisations. When assessing candidates we look at more than just the jobs you’ve been paid to do, including the range of ways you’ve picked up skills and knowledge throughout your life.
Successful applicants may also have the opportunity to participate in a program such as the Racial Justice Program run by Democracy in Colour, offering on-the-job training, support, mentoring and leadership development for First Nations people and people of colour working in the progressive movement.
Position description
In this role you will:
- Coordinate Blak Greens activities: Liaise with the Blak Greens to organise meetings, events, and communications, and ensure high-quality record keeping.
- Grow First Nations membership: Organise engagement with First Nations communities, organisations and individuals, inside and outside the Victorian Greens.
- Support First Nations advocacy: Coordinate engagement between the Blak Greens and key stakeholders, support affirmative action efforts, and work to increase First Nations leadership at all levels.
- Empower First Nations members: Develop strategies for ongoing engagement with first Nations Members, and provide training opportunities to strengthen First Nations participation in the Victorian Greens.
- Mentor First Nations candidates: Identify potential candidates and help them to navigate preselection, develop campaign strategies, and build community organising skills.
- Manage reporting and financial processes: Track First Nations membership, assess the progress of affirmative action efforts, and work with the Treasurer of the Blak Greens Victoria to maintain budgets.
- Complete other work as required: As a part of a small, agile staff team, you’ll be supported by your colleagues with your priority work supporting First Nations members, and subject to your capacity, you may also be asked to support your colleagues with other work along the way.
Selection criteria
We encourage you to apply even if you don’t have all of the relevant skills. We’re looking for someone who is organised and effective and has a passion for our movement, which we prioritise over formal education or qualifications.
We believe there is strength in diversity and are committed to supporting the right person to grow into this role and thrive. For a confidential conversation about this role or the recruitment process, please contact us at [email protected].

- Stakeholder engagement: Experience connecting with First Nations communities, and helping to build positive working relationships (including genuine deep listening) with and between First Nations people and other stakeholders.
