The Australian Education Union (AEU) is a national union of nearly 200,000 educators in public schools and TAFEs. The ACT Branch represents teachers, school assistants, school psychologists and other support staff across the territory.
The AEU is united by our passion for making a difference in the lives of young Australians and our belief that fair pay and conditions for Australian educators is an investment in our country’s future.
As educational experts and the people who make public education happen every day, we have a say in how our schools and TAFE campuses work. Through our union, we campaign for resources to create the best possible learning environments and we join in debates about the shape of our public schools and TAFEs. We speak up to ensure the community appreciates the value of public education.
Working together, we win better salaries and working conditions. We’re here for each other with support and advice. We make sure we have the conditions, resources, and recognition we need to give each and every child in our care the best possible start in life.
The successful applicant will be intrinsically motivated by the work of this union and the broader union movement. You will be excited to come in to work every day and get satisfaction from helping our members have better working lives. You will be proud of the work that you do and produce consistent, high-quality work.
You will have experience, training and/or knowledge in industrial relations, employment law or human resources. Preferably, you will have experience working with, or for, unions. Ideally, this would be working as an Industrial Officer or similar. You’ll have a strong understanding of the Fair Work system, as well as other laws impacting on our members such as work health and safety, workers compensation and discrimination laws.
You will be key in the industrial work of the union, including advice, case support, and advocacy for and on behalf of AEU members on a range of issues they face at work, including matters arising under enterprise agreements, misconduct investigations, and work health and safety issues.
You will need to possess strong negotiation and advocacy skills to assist members achieving the best possible outcome. This will require you to advocate for and represent members’ interests with the employer, ACT Government and a broad range of other stakeholders. Being able to develop and foster positive working relationships both internal and external to the AEU will be crucial.
As the work of the team is the most visible to AEU members, it is critical that members feel understood and supported in their interactions with our team. You will need to approach your work in an understanding and empathetic way.
From time to time, you will be required to represent the branch and advocate for the interests of members. This could include before the Fair Work Commission, employer consultative committees and stakeholder forums, as well as our Branch Council. You will also play a crucial role in identifying industrial issues facing the AEU and its members. At times, this will involve supporting the work of the AEU’s organising team in its campaign activities, as well as identifying opportunities to address industrial issues in a proactive manner.
We offer you an opportunity to work with in one of Australia’s largest and most successful unions advocating for workers’ rights and public education.
