Industrial Officer

The Australian Education Union represents members working in public education in Victoria.

The union is seeking an Industrial Officer in our Melbourne office. The position is fixed term (2 years) and full time employee (1.0 FTE). The time-fraction of the position is flexible and part-time options are available for the right candidate.

The Industrial officer will work with other industrial officers, the union’s leadership and staff to advance and protect members’ interests in State and Commonwealth courts and industrial tribunals.

A current practising certificate is highly desirable.

Remuneration: The full-time annual salary for this position is in the range $129,406 to $148,242 depending on skills and experience, plus 16.5% superannuation. Generous leave entitlements include six weeks’ annual leave and ten days’ time off in lieu per year.

Selection criteria

ESSENTIAL

• Demonstrated commitment to unionism
• An understanding of and commitment to public education
• Demonstrated skills and experience in advocacy and conducting industrial and employment litigation
• Capacity to contribute to strategic industrial policy development in the education industry
• Detailed knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) and employment law, the operations of the Fair Work Commission, and the industrial jurisdiction of relevant courts
• Experience in enterprise bargaining, particularly in the public sector and in drafting enterprise agreements
• Relevant tertiary qualifications, preferably legal or industrial relations qualifications
• Understanding of gender and employment issues as they apply to a union in which the majority of members are women
• High level computer skills and knowledge including use of Word and Excel

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

• Holds an unrestricted practising certificate
• Litigation experience in the Supreme Court of Victoria and the Federal Court of Australia
• Demonstrated skills and experience in handling and resolving members’ workers compensation cases
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar position
