About the Baker Institute

The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is an independent, internationally renowned medical research facility. Our work extends from the laboratory to wide-scale community studies with a focus on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator to join our friendly Community and Corporate Relations team. The purpose of this position is to help ensure the perspectives, priorities and experiences of people living with heart disease and diabetes and their informal carers are considered in the Baker Institute’s research activities. The focus of this role is to build community engagement capacity across the Baker Institute through central coordination of tasks related to engaging those directly impacted by heart disease and diabetes in our research.

Key Duties

In this role you will be expected to:

Program Development

  • Provide support for development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of community engagement initiatives to ensure best practice engagement of individuals with personal experience with heart disease and diabetes and their informal caregivers in research at the Baker Institute.
  • Promote inclusiveness of marginalised groups including those from diverse cultural backgrounds, people who identify as being LGBTI, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people living in rural and remote areas, and develop appropriate strategies to meet individual needs and improve access.

Program Coordination

  • Act as the key liaison for community representatives and facilitate community advisory group meetings and other initiatives to ensure a positive experience by members.
  • Liaise with project leaders and researchers to facilitate community representative consultation and input for individual Baker Institute research projects.

Skills and Experience

You will have:

  • A relevant degree in addition to demonstrated experience and training in consumer engagement in medical research setting.
  • Extensive project management experience and skills, including application of relevant project management tools, or equivalent practical methodologies, for managing issues and risk.
  • High level of interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Strong cross-functional team working skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to respond to underlying stakeholder need.
